When I saw this image in thumbnail in the cue, I thought this was a picture of water. Only the caption and a larger view of the texture clued me in on the idea that it was sand. I think that's good because it's a strong composition based on shapes and shadows and tone instead of context. That's a pretty strong point here.

I like some of the lines in the sand that you can see; in the frame, the ones that run more or less vertically to the plane of viewing; good delicate shadow detail.

For some reason, I find it hard to see the bands of gray in the shadow detail with my monitor; I suspect that this picture will do better printed than on screen.

I liked the slanting, diagonal nature of the shadows in the dips in the sand that are the subject here; it shows depth; the shadows are not overbearing; being able to see into the shadows and see the texture on the midtone highlight side keep this from being a cliche photo. I think a lot of people could have shot this at a higher contrast, and the photo would have looked like many others. Good job picking the soft treatment; it's a strong point.

Overall, good job. J.
