Great shot. Personally, I'm not so sure about the foreground. In B&W I feel it takes away from the form and lines of the bridge. It's a personal choice. I'd have cropped it. 6/6

I like the look of it; the clouds especially. I didn't even notice the foreground till I read the item above. I'd prefer to see the lower ends of the cable stays on the right side, instead of them being cut off.

I like the foreground. It shows so well the texture of water, and it highlights for me the difference from for example, ice, although it is caught statically.

The dark tones remind me from when not so much was done on computer and some people used to print the slides in B&W, obtaining so negatives.

Are you sure the bridge is white in reality? ;)

Thank you everyone for the nice comments, they are most appreciated.

Bill and Henry, I understand what you guys say about the foreground, but I really like it to be included as it gives more depth to the photo and I found the texture of that mud interesting.

Stephen, you are right about the ends of the cables cut off on the right side. Probably I didn't include them because I wanted to get as most as I could of the low part of the bridge, but 35mm is my wider and only lens (fixed...).

Rycho, dla mnie tez ale raz na jakis czas tez lubie takie. Dzieki za mysl (:

Maria, yes this bridge looks rather white as it is made of fair concrete. In the colour version of this shot it looks golden due to the setting sun.

Alexandre, very rich tonal range. I strive to get my BW images to look like this and still learning. I recently discovered some quite useful tools/options in PS curve adjustment (not the regular Normal mode) are quite useful. This image is nothing short of magnificant. I like it a lot. BTW, definitely keep the foreground otherwise the image will be too flat IMHO.

What an amazing sky, bridge and picture Alex. I think you have made a great crop because I love the contrast in the structure between the grain foreground and the polished sky. I don't agree with Stephen about the cable stays. I think that showing the ends of it will bring the picture out of it's balance. It's good as it is now. Well, that is my opinion, Alex. Many greetings, Ada~)

Thank you for your input Jerry. About the b&w technique used here you are right, part of it relies on curves and I've discovered it while experimenting. As far as I remember I worked with 3 layer masks: sky, river, and brigde. As for the sky, first I pulled down the curve creating deep blues and increasing contrast with the clouds. Only then I converted to grey scale in the channel mixer, leaving the blue channel with a value close to zero or even negative, while increasing the amount of red and not so much of green. This may create an awful amount of noise which I remove in the end using Neat Image. That was just about it, but if you're interested in knowing more details email me.

Ada, me too, I was happy with the contrast created by the foreground and I'm glad that it also has some more fans. Thank you for leaving your thoughts, always much appreciated. Greetings!

Very nicely done--I wouldn't change a thing! Tonal range, composition, lighting, all spot-on in my book!

A ponte mais fotografada da europa! Aqui estᠵ estrelas. Este p&b faz a diferenca.

Parabens.

This bridge - Vasco da Gama - has been shot hundreds of times and it is a subject that only captures my attention when the picture is different. This one is outstanding, believe me.

A very impressive image that I instantly like. For me, the foreground is not a distraction; I like the abstract effect it adds. The perspective, the view of the bridge, is superb. But (as remarked by others), I find the way the bridge is cut off at right a real distraction. Also, the cloud at top left doesn't seem to belong; I would clone it out, and the darkest clouds seem to be a bit too dark. But the overall impact of this one is very strong.
