maria 7 Posted December 21, 2005 The Church of Our Lady of Batalha (if I remember the name well; in Portugal the majority of churches is devoted to Our Lady) is characterised by a particular sub-style of the Gothic, the Manuelino. Outstanding architectural qualities, given mainly by the highly original, national Gothic style leaded that the main church of this Dominican monastery was included in the UNESCO world heritage list. Batalha meaning battle (or batalie in Romanian for example) the monastery was built to commemorate the Portuguese victory - namely one over the Castilians in the 14th century. thanks for looking Maria Link to comment
