Adam, I think you may need a grad ND filter to balance the exposure of the sun and land.

There was a lot of detail in the black area that I chose to drop out in my RAW processing. With that in mind, do you think I went too far?

Adam, well.....I still think that a grad ND filter would have made this shot awesome. This is one of those shots where if you over expose then the sky is going to be too light and if you under expose, the foreground will be too dark. The grad ND filter fixes issues like that. I had this issue too. I just got my filter but haven't had a chance to use it yet. If you have PS CS2 look into HDR.
