South!

salvatore.mele

Straight out of camera, but a slight horizon tilt correction.1/15 sec to blur a bit the water and give a sense of motion

In summer, above the arctic circle, the sun never sets.

We were leaving the high latitudes, sailing the Imram South for a lasttime, with the sun in our back, when rain hit us, in the magic light.

I would welcome your comments and criticims on the composition of thisshot. I fear I wanted to show too much (the magic light, the rainclouds, the sunset/sunrise, the boat) and ended up cluttering thecomposition. For instance, part of the foreground spars are out of focus.

A comparison with a later companion shot is also welcome.

P.S. should you like this, more shots of that night are in this samefolder.

Actually, you might want to see this LARGER, even though this would enhance the ISO 400 noise of the D70 sensor I happened to pick-up in this relatively low-light situation.

My usual practice is to blather on about how I'd improve this, but I'm unable to think of a single thing to say, so I guess I'll just have to enjoy it . . . . . . in its entirety and every single little detail.

My all time favorite of yours, if memory serves. Well done!!

Salvatore, While there may be a lot in this composition, it does a wonderful job of giving us all a seat on the Imram. I love how there's a hint of the red glow on the transom of the boat. I think if I look at this long enough, I'll begin to feel the gentle roll of the waves and hear the unique sound that's made by the bow cutting through the water.

I agree. The magic touch for me is the matching glowing peaks (left and right) and particularly the way you've positioned that left peak between the sails. Cheers.

... a rare case in which the comments leave me almost as speachless as the real scene did. Time to go look for some images of the rainbow which came later.

Carl, you made my day.

Laurie, I can indeed still hear the noise of the bow when I look at this shot, and feel the wind. This is technically North Atlantic, but the waves are stopped by the string of islands you see, so they were indeed gentle, to the point we cut -pretty fast- through them with no real rolling. That was not the case outside the islands...

Leigh, I clearly remember I thought of placing that peak to the left of the foresail, while composing this. I am glad you noticed it.

Juan, thanks.

Both are very appealing. i'd choose this one for the sky and glow on the peaks but i do like the dynamics of the previous upload better. Regards,

Much better than the midnight dream shot, which feels too weighed down by all the ropes, esp. the bundle on the left. This one, however, is freer, more relaxed, but the hint of wash(that's the right word, isn't it?) at the bottom combined by the upwards diagonal uptop, still gives the impression of movement and speed. Very nice.

Julio, A.K. thanks.

Pawel, Stephen, I also prefer this one over the other, even though I never rationalised the reason. The main fact is that, having been there, both images bring back the same full, 360-degree, memories. Thanks to your insight, it is evident why one works actually better than the other.
