Landrum Kelly 64 Posted November 27, 2005 This is beautiful, Kim. It's nice to know that the birds aren't shopped in. --Lannie Link to comment
kslonaker 0 Posted November 27, 2005 Actually, I "shopped" a few OUT, Lannie! :) That's one thing with a shrimp boat - the birds are all over it! Link to comment
bille 0 Posted November 27, 2005 Great shot Kim. Especially, I like the *high key*-like look. Michael Link to comment
kslonaker 0 Posted November 27, 2005 Thanks, Michael. I was trying to make it difficult to see the line between water and sky. They were almost the same color! Link to comment
aepelbacher 0 Posted November 27, 2005 You were successful ... it's barely noticeable. I like that ... makes the ship seem to be suspended in thin air. (I almost said that it makes the ship seem to "float", but that would have sounded strange....) :-D Link to comment
afterthoughts 0 Posted November 27, 2005 Excellent work! The birds flocking around the boat really make this one unique. Link to comment
kslonaker 0 Posted November 28, 2005 Sky & water were almost the same color so I went with a bit of a high-key effect to get rid of the overlap as much as possible. Did a sepia layer and overlaid it on the color layer, bringing some of it back. Link to comment
kleintje 0 Posted November 28, 2005 Wonderful! You succeeded very well in letting the sky and the water flow into each other. The end result is almost like a painting. Link to comment
hondo 0 Posted November 28, 2005 Kim, I wonder if you could have created the same affect with desaturation of every thing but blues? I am just learning to use photoshop and wish I understood how you did this. It is a very nice shot. 7/7 Link to comment
kslonaker 0 Posted November 28, 2005 Thanks, guys and gals! Leon, I may have been able to achieve the same effect with desaturating the blue only. I was just messing around with layers, trying different things, and that's how I got this particular effect, but there can be more ways than one to get a certain look. When I have a minute, I'll play with the original and see what happens doing it the way you mentioned. Link to comment
donnaalbers 0 Posted November 28, 2005 Kim, I like this effect very much. . . the blending of the water and sky work very well and I like the subtle toning imparted by the sepia. . Link to comment

thomas_collins1 0 Posted November 29, 2005 Oh, I like this sooooo much! I can relate to it with my many years of boating experience. This really brings back the memories. Just wonderful Kim. Thanks for sharing! Link to comment
kslonaker 0 Posted November 29, 2005 So....you were a shrimper, Thomas! :) It's very soothing, watching the boats on the water. Thanks for taking the time to comment, everyone. Link to comment
bmudd 0 Posted November 29, 2005 You can hear the diesel engine and the seagulls....great image!! Good choice of style. Leaving one or two seagulls in front of the boat might have been more preferable, maybe not?? Probably not, else you would have left them in....ignore me Kim....typing my thoughts.Like it a lot,Regards, Brendan Link to comment
kslonaker 0 Posted November 30, 2005 Brendan, I only cloned out a couple of seagulls and they were in the sky, but were so far away, they looked like specks of dirt. Amazingly enough, there were none right in the front of the boat; I guess all the action was to the rear where the shrimp was. Thanks for the comments, Pulok & Brendan! Link to comment
atkphotoworks 0 Posted December 3, 2005 Nicely composed Kim with the ship a little off centered. The birds in the air and water make the image for me. Link to comment
Guest Guest Posted December 3, 2005 Kim, An uncommonly well done shot of a scene that's fairly common in my neck of the woods. The birds were kind enough to help balance your composition. You handled the water/sky merge beautifully. A hair more space at the very top of the frame might be nice but certainly not necessary. You've inspired me to make time to visit the shrimp boats. kslonaker 0 Posted December 4, 2005 Thanks, Amar and Laurie. I was initially driven to take the shot because of all the birds around the boat as it was coming in to dock. Link to comment
1000wordsphotography 0 Posted December 4, 2005 My new favorite...the treatment you have given it makes it feel like a painting...love it. Link to comment
kslonaker 0 Posted December 4, 2005 Thanks, Regina. I might play around a little more with some of my shrimp boat images. I'm thinking a sepia treatment might work well, too. Link to comment
tom l 0 Posted December 4, 2005 Great work Kim both in the composition and your post-processing treatment. Link to comment
