disneyry 0 Posted November 26, 2005 Good image either way, but I'd crop out everything from the left of the depression between the two largest peaks in the clouds. The land in the background is too out of focus and distracts from the image.Ryan Disney Link to comment
jeremy freeland 0 Posted January 31, 2006 In the nicest way, I think Ryan's suggested crop would be deadly dull. There's a nice, and I think ambitious, tonal transition between the lower right corner and upper left corner. I like how the grey / blue cloud forms lies in the middle of this. I also like the use of the rocks in the lower right foreground to anchor the composition and how their shadows set the scene for the tonal transition. But I wonder if the transition isn't too extreme - the clouds on the upper left are very bright white (though I know my monitor isn't great with highlights so, could be me), and the colours on the hillside seem maybe a little washed out. But I do enjoy the contrast between the very bright and sunlit upper section, and the cooler shadows of the lower right corner. Hope this helps. Best, Jeremy. Link to comment
atle.g 0 Posted January 31, 2006 Jeremy,Thanks for your insightful critique. Yes the transition is quite extreme. It had been pouring down with rain, and a sudden change to clear blue sky gave the very bright clouds. As usual i used velvia, and with the properties of that film, this i clearly on the borderline in what it can handle. Scanned with epson 3200... the dark bottom came out a bit darker than reality. Your critique also indicates that you think the comp works, and not seeing a left side crop as any improvement. Left crop or not has been my key concern here...so perhaps i will go for this version. Cheers! Link to comment
leighperry 0 Posted February 1, 2006 Great to see a new shot from you Atle. I like this a lot. It's abstract and just a little disconcerting, but that's a very good thing. I wouldn't crop it at all. My only suggestion relates to the cloud -- you could use a curve to pick a tiny bit more highlight detail out of it, and I'd consider burning in the left 5% of the cloud too just to make it a touch more 'contained' within the frame. But congratulations on a thought provoking shot. Regards. Link to comment
atle.g 0 Posted February 1, 2006 Leigh, thanks for your input.I agree on your suggestions, burning would help here... And two votes for the comp, makes me go for this version. Link to comment
carsten_ranke 0 Posted March 12, 2006 I think the left side is important because it adds depth and suspense. I would not crop, and agree with Leigh about the clouds (perhaps there is more detail in the original slide). Great landscape. Link to comment
atle.g 0 Posted March 13, 2006 Thanks Carsten. The scanning is mediocre.. so i would assume there are some more details in the slide, havent checked this one for a while though ;-) Cheers! Link to comment
alberto.conde 0 Posted March 21, 2006 It's perflecty balanced as it is. Beautiful colours, as it should with Velvia! Magnificent landscape with a perfect play of clouds, mist and reflections. Well done. Link to comment

alberto.conde 0 Posted October 27, 2006 Well, Atle, you know that I'm a fan of Velvia (or I was up to the moment of becoming digital) but we, Velvia lovers, have to accept that it has less latitude than Provia and shadows come out very -too- shadowy.having said that, The image is very good, very well composed and no sky should be cropped out, IMMO. atle.g 0 Posted November 1, 2006 Hello my friend!! Thanks for dropping by. And...yes velvia is about agony and extacy :-) ....and in particular the shadows as you mentioned. Havent found the time to photographing in a long time now. But when start again i might change to digital SLR...even if i love velvia. Time will show :-) Link to comment
