salvatore.mele 1 Posted November 23, 2005 It's a bit tacky and cheesy... isn't it? But it was like thatonce the light woke us up in the sailboat we were sailing around theAeolian islands.Comments and criticism (and ratings, just for a test) are much welcome.P.S. The sky kept on being fascinating, later thatday... Link to comment

Guest Guest Posted November 24, 2005 Salvatore, I love the unconventional composition!! My eye is playing a tug of war (in a good way) between the beautiful soft clouds and the strong vivid orange created by the rising sun. You know I like a play between warm and cool colors and when they're complimentary colors, all the better. I see nothing "tacky and cheesy" here. The only thing I'd change is the horizon that's sloping counter-clockwise ever so slightly. Link to comment
jeff.grant 0 Posted November 24, 2005 I don't see 'tacky and cheesy'. I see a magic light show. I'd leave it as it is, other than the slight tilt. Link to comment
savoca 0 Posted November 24, 2005 Fantastic cloud formation and nicely contrasting rock formation - as has been said there is a lot going on in this seemingly simple picture: the small clouds lead the eye OUT of the picture but the rock is so prominent one has to come back down, following the larger clouds wandering off again and so on. I wonder how a border in grey (or white) would work, but I'm not sure, maybe black is best. Very well done, congratulations ! Link to comment
forrest_andrew 0 Posted November 25, 2005 what a great way to start the day! quite the sky indeed. i'd also agree with the others regarding this not being 'tacky and cheesy' - possibly not as unique as many of your shots, but certainly not tacky. anyway, is it just me or is there a faint pale strip along the the right hand edge and similar indications of some horizontal lines in the top right?? scanning issues? salvatore.mele 1 Posted November 29, 2005 I am impressed by the warm reception of this image... I shot it several months ago and never thought it was deserving visibility: no one had actually seen it yet! I am glad you all liked it.A few technical points.Laurie, Jeff: the horizon is distorted rather than tilted. That's 20mm on 35mm film. I can turn the shot more clockwise, but then the horizon between the orange tip (Panarea) and the horison island (Lipari) will get tilted badly, and this will be maybe worse. This is the great problem of shooting at sea with the 20mm on film, which I also had in this other shot. Any suggestions to cure this in PS Elements 2.0?Andrew, the strips are indeed there. The negative was horrbly bent by the processer: one of the reasons I went digital. I will try to lay it below a couple of dictionaries and give it another scan. Again, my thanks to all of you: I should have shot more of that sky... Link to comment
seven 0 Posted December 12, 2005 Beautiful light; as if the rocks are red with fire, the clouds resultant smoke.Horizontal & vertical interest, warm and cool/ soft hard/ liquid contrast.I suppose you were shooting from too low to include more water in the fg?Stirs my wanderlust. Link to comment
salvatore.mele 1 Posted December 12, 2005 Seven, thanks for your comment. I am glad this image stirred your wanderlust indeed! As for including more water, I was shooting 1.5m above the waterline, from the deck of our sailboat... I could have aimed the camera more down to get more water, but this would have lost too much of the sky. So I did not go for that. The alternative was to shot this vertical, but I did not like the framing, since the strong sloping diagonal of the endline of the cloud was a crucial element for me, and I would have ended up getting too little of it. salvatore.mele 1 Posted January 29, 2006 David, thanks. I will have to make time to play more with this image. I guess is among the best I brought back from that trip. Link to comment
salvatore.mele 1 Posted February 6, 2006 Jana, thanks. Sometimes (often?) it is just matter of being in the right place at the right time... Link to comment
susan stone 0 Posted February 9, 2006 One of the things I really like about your compositions is that I get to "go along" and see such beautiful places without leaving the comfort of my chair. Your images are so well composed and exposed. But......sometimes the black frames feel too heavy, I like a simple black frame and use one often but this one feels like it's over powering the beauty of the image. I love the warm reds against the cool of the sky and the flow of the clouds. Nice capture Salvatore. Link to comment
salvatore.mele 1 Posted February 9, 2006 Susan, thanks. I guess one of the reasons for which I started taking pictures altogether was indeed to crystallise the scenery I happen to see while travelling. Link to comment
yodo 0 Posted February 16, 2006 Great picture! I like the opposite diagonals made bye the two different clouds formations. And the colors... Great great great picture!!! Link to comment
