Another take on an earlier idea I had at this location. This time I

used larger scan angle to give more room for cropping.

comments and suggestions are welcome,

Perfect use of slow shutter speed. Great location and a great sky. This looks like this was a hard place to get to. I don't surpose that you were standing on a paved road when you took this, were you?

This is the famous great falls national park in virgina. Only half-hour drive from downtown DC. This particular spot is relatively easy to get to and only 10 min walk from the parking lot.

However, on this particular day, I was furious because I had to wait 45mins in line to get into the park. It was an awesome fall sunday day. As always nature-lovers were flooding the regional parks, happy to see the color change, despite a below-average year.

The problem was that the park rangers at the door wrongly had been assuming that there had been no parking space available, hence they had been slowing things. When I finally got in, not only I did not search for one, but I saw many empty spots.

Anycase, I am glad now, that I did not give up as many did that day.

What's there to critique...This is a perfect execution and a beautiful shot. The textures and the colors in the sky are superbly balanced. Excellent photo.

Great shot, lighting is beautiful, my only comment for change would be concerning the horizon line and how it is in the center of the photo. I could see cropping down from the top just under the little cloud in the top right corner. Just a thought??!!

Todd, there are two reasons why I did not have a tighter crop in the sky:

1) from the start my intention was to have square-format. I saw the excessive space above, but I could not crop it more than what it's here.

2) Unfortunately, it is hard to see in this small image, but the empty sky is actually filled with tiny stars and when printed >13 inch wide, they are clearly visible, I almost convinved myself that these stars add to the composition.

Finally, I do still want square format. Before I give up, I'm inclined to make additional changes -possibly- by filling the sky with more clouds or making the stars more visible.

I cannot see the stars but would think that if they come into the composition then the crop would work well. I understand the square format thing, I was a Hasselblad shooter for years. I will look for a new version if you post one. Thanks for sharing.

I really like this photo. I understand and appreciate your reasons for not cropping it, but I really think it would be a stronger photo if about half of the sky were cropped out. My advice: print it both ways and after some amount of time (weeks or months) it will become clear to you whether to crop or not. A great photo either way.

i find it interesting that everytime there is some clear sky in a shot that there is always a comment about cropping it down. Including this weeks POW. I almost think that there must be some unwritten rule about this running around in this community. It really makes me wonder what would be said if Ansel Adams had posted "Moonrise, Hernandez New Mexico".

Stars or no stars, the blue sky creates a sense of space, a suggestion of infinity, that would be lost by cropping. For me, I like exposure for the water, but it is the limited movement of the clouds, almost like camera shake, that I find a bit distracting. I would rather see more movement or less. That said, it is still a very nice photo

I'd like to add here that the river was exposed 30secs exactly. it includes >4 frames. The sky has been exposed ~20mins later. I tried multiple exposures with durations from 30secs to 5 secs (obviously different at ISO and fstop settings).

After reviewing the results later, I decided NOT to use 30secs long exposure of clouds, as they were blurred beyond recognition. Instead of a shapeless orange blob, I prefer fasionably blurred clouds.
