Jayme Hall suggested that a similar photograph might make a good advertising campaign for breast cancer awareness.

I have to honest and say the thought never crossed my mind. However, after reading her comment, I did think that this version of the photograph would be more hard hitting due to the more menacing knife.

Your thoughts on this will be very much appreciated.

Interesting, and with a touch of the macabre, I think. I like it, although I don't see it in relation to any sort of breast cancer awareness. Perhaps I am missing the...uh-h-h...point?

this one doesnt hit me like the other does. It feels cramped to me.

David- I prefer the other perspective and lighting a little better, but... I like the set up of this tic-tac-toe. This one infers the O's (the breast) will win. I still say, if you change that knife to a scalpel it would make a great advertisement. It's so creative and different, I think it would make women think & talk! :)

hi - in general i enjoy the photo, but there are a couple things that throw me off. first, the indication of blood(?) on the knife edge is very clean, making it seem less realistic - if the x's were made with blood, surely there would be traces of that on the blade; that being said, i feel that maybe the whole composition would be stronger if all of the writing was in red, and a clearer indication of blood was given.. that is, IF your goal was to indicate such in the first place. The green on blue is a little too much for the RGB for my tastes. And it makes me wonder, what were you thinking of about this composition, before your friend indicated the breast cancer theme?

Thanks for your detailed critique. The original point of this photograph was nothing to do with breast cancer. It was a suggestion by Jayme and I just posted this version to see if that idea would fly. The simple answer to that is that it didn't. Oh well.

Your point about the blood on the knife may or may not be valid. However, I believe that pyschotics who take pleasure in this sort of thing, would clean the knife before each incision. I am happy to be corrected on this.

The different colours were used simply to give colour to the photograph. The idea was simply to make the viewer think. Remove the knife and maybe no one would have known the red was signifying blood.

The photograph is simply that. What you see in it is up to you.

I really appreciate the time and honesty!

Hi David

I think it is a wonderful image, and is one that does have something to say. As a doctor, I would welcome it for a breast cancer awareness campaign.

If you were to repeat it with that in mind, you should replace the carving knife with a surgical scalple. The blood is unnessessary.

Fond regards, Nick.

...you should be able to buy one in any good model making or craft shop, as they are not just good for surgery!

Best wishes, Nick.

I felt I had to contribute to this discussion, despite it being three years old(!) Primarily, I'd like to congratulate David on some very artistic and thought provoking photographs. As far as this particular shot is concerned, I was very interested in some of the comments made regarding its use in promoting awareness of breast cancer. I know this is not how the shot was initially intended but, as others have said, I think it could make a very strong point in that capacity.

Jayme Hall says that the OXO design "infers the O's (the breast) will win"; I beg to differ. Both O and X are capable of winning, depending on who takes the next turn. Considering that the knife about to make its mark is tinged with red paint/blood I would suggest that X is winning. (Perhaps this would be a message in any such advertising? Just a thought.)

Of course, as David himself has said, all art is open to interpretation but that is how I saw it. Maybe somebody is simply about to have their nipple painted? :)

Comments are welcome no matter how 'late' they are. You are correct. 'X' is about to win the game. Thanks for taking so much time to comment. It is appreciated.
