colin carron 58,916 Posted November 19, 2005 Staithes is a small fishing village in Yorkshire on the east coast of England. It was raining while we were there and my wife decided to stay in the car while I took some photos. ('Have fun, dear'). I like photographing landscapes in the rain - just as well living in UK! - especially when the light shines through the clouds. All comments welcome! Link to comment

thatbloke 0 Posted November 19, 2005 Very nice, love the brightness coming through the clouds, perhaps I shall go out in the rain more often Link to comment
Guest Guest Posted November 19, 2005 Nice shot Colin, I see exactly what you mean about foreground content with that lens, the colours are wondefully muted in this shot, would you care to share your post processing technique with us? The little 'cloud' in fron of the right hand cliff, is that a water droplet on the lens, or a real cloud? It's the only minor thing I can moan about - you make critiqueing hard work. ;) Link to comment
terry foster 0 Posted November 19, 2005 A Lovley photo Colin. Just as i remembered Staithes back in 1980s when i used to go sea fishing fome here. I see the Cod and Lobster is still there. Great work thanks. Link to comment
rkynast 1 Posted November 19, 2005 Beautiful shot, Colin. I love the glassy feel to the water and beach - well done. Link to comment
carsten_ranke 0 Posted November 19, 2005 You made the long awaited "waterproof test" for the EF-S 10-22 ? Joking aside, this is awesome, I can almost feel the rain. Is that a water drop on the lens that caused the foggy effect in the center ? Cheers Carsten Link to comment
mrhaydon 0 Posted November 19, 2005 Nicely done Colin, I must get me a wide angle lens. Link to comment
w. roger keagle 0 Posted November 19, 2005 Both in the light and content...something about the sun and angle it shines above 50 degrees North...nothing else like it...well done...worth getting a bit damp mate. Link to comment
sondra kick 0 Posted November 19, 2005 Colin, nice image, love that wide angle lens. Wonderful capture in the rain, it adds to any photo. Link to comment
alexandra rauh 0 Posted November 20, 2005 This is enchanting Colin. Looks like You where sitting at a easel, painting with a very fine brush. But you did that very thoughtful with Your camara. Like it was said, I can feel the rain and the thin air,the resting boats with the spare, but effectful colors.amazing achievment Link to comment
abintraphoto 0 Posted November 20, 2005 Nice work Colin, as usual ........ I'm wondering when you shoot something like this, if you shoot versions with the horizon located in different parts of the frame ? ...... Or was it raining too hard - (-; Link to comment
pnital 36 Posted November 20, 2005 Colin, Turner is fresh in my mind....I realy like a lot your use of that Lens. I have to use mine more after seeing your great results. I like the two parallel lines of boats and houses that have a color similarity, and the beautiful wet scene in general. Pnina Link to comment
colin carron 58,916 Posted November 20, 2005 Thanks Rod, Roger, Ben, Terry, Richard, Carsten, Michael, Roger, Sondra, Alix, Ken and Pnina. I appreciate your comments. Ben, post-processing : this is a single frame but I have cut it up and reassembled it slightly. The sky is full frame, the village is brought a bit closer, cropping the outer edges, and the boats are aligned better to the corners. A bit of mist added to disguise a rain spot (!) and a bit of levels and USM on the village and boats. I wanted to get closer to the boats but did not have me wellies with me! Terry, can't recall the names of the pubs but they looked very inviting in the cold and wet.... Richard, I took quite a few shots from here, standing on the harbour wall and this was the one where the clouds became just a little thinner for a moment and gave that shine on the water. Carsten, yes, I believe only 'L' lenses are waterproof - but it still seems to be working. In and out of the bag quickly and a cloth to clean up the UV filter and ND grad. (And not drop them several metres into the harbour of course!). There was a droplet in the centre here - disguised with a little more mist! Roger, damp but happy.....! Alix, a photo can never quite be a painting but PS does give so much freedom for playing! Ken, I place the horizon differently in some shots. But although I took quite a few here, this one didn't lend itself to that as all the elements (boats, village, sky) didn't allow a lot of altenatives. I would have liked a slightly lower position but it was either standing on the harbour wall or in several feet of water. Pnina, yes, Turner loved wet and windy weather - anything wild and stormy :-) he is an inspiration. Link to comment
harnstrom1 0 Posted November 20, 2005 Moody wet. Great idea to stop the car and shoot through the window. Very nice. I don't know the proper term in english, in sweden we say "Golden Cut". The boats, lines and shapes lead the eye to a fix point at the golden cut. I think this is a classic composition with foreground, depth and you can apply the golden cut. Link to comment
cherlyn 1 Posted November 20, 2005 Nice light through the moody clouds.. The boats seem to be sitting on a piece of smooth glistening mirror. A nice scape captured on a rainy day. Link to comment

iren 1 Posted November 20, 2005 Very nice capture...as often your work is!- everything works in this shot...the light, the mood, the wide angle shot! Hopefully your wife was patient and enjoyed your efforts after! Kind regards, Iren Link to comment
david robinson 0 Posted November 20, 2005 Colin, damn this is good -- rich mood, interesting perspective and scene, dramatic sky, not to mention rain. You should arrange with a shop there to sell this print for you. This one would sell well... Link to comment
roberto_carli 0 Posted November 20, 2005 Great job indeed Colin, glad to see ur shot!!! Best. Link to comment
henrimanguy 0 Posted November 21, 2005 The bad weather is often very photogenic, provinding that the sky is not totally overcast. That was your chance here and the effect is superb. However, I would have prefered a composition whith the frame not divided in two equal parts. Regards, Henri Link to comment
kslonaker 0 Posted November 22, 2005 Quite a magical shot, Colin! I love the depth and lighting here. Link to comment

colin carron 58,916 Posted November 24, 2005 Thanks everyone, for your kind comments. My wife is (mostly) patient when I go off with the camera. Often she comes too and her camera has more Mpixels than mine now.(envy!) Link to comment
