Aesthetically, it's a little too contrasty for me. I hope that is make-up or PS and she wasn't beaten as badly as it looks she was.

Just post-processing to arrive at the image I wanted.

 

No persons or small furry animals were harmed whilst making this photograph.

What were you trying to achieve with this image?

Andy - there is a clue is in the title.

 

Despite all the pain and despite the suffering of many people, I like to think there is always a deep well of resilience, hope and desire to overcome in most of us. Most, of course.

 

I hoped that the woman pictured would illustrate this to some extent - and that the striking nature of the image would provide food for thought. I also hoped it would pose questions as to how the woman came to be in this state - that element certainly appears to have worked.

 

Trying to conclusively articulate all aspects of an idea is notoriously difficult - no different for me - but I hope that helped.
