dimitris 0 Posted November 8, 2005 Great IR capture Bill, really nice start! :-) Very beautiful composition, looks great in pure B+W! I think you could improve its tonal range, especially in bottom right area. Some detail is lost in the highlights, common problem with IR... If you use PS CS you can use the shadow/highlight tool to restore some detail, if not you can burn the area. I created an edit with S/H tool to give you an idea. Best regards. Link to comment
billfoster 0 Posted November 9, 2005 Thanks Dimitris ... that looks great. I actually used the shadows/highlight tool on this already, but didn't go far enough obviously. Thanks again. I'm going to keep at it. I posted 4, but this is the only one I really like. I love the sky; you could barely see those wispy clouds in real life but the IR really brought them out. Link to comment
billfoster 0 Posted November 11, 2005 Just got a Hoya R72 ... this is one of my first attempts with it. Link to comment
jim kerr 0 Posted November 14, 2005 Hello Bill, I also have an 828 that I do IR with, been at it for only(IR with the 828) about 8 weeks. Here's the filter combination that really works for me. R-72 plus 4XND plus a polarizer. Now it will block out the corners of the frame below about 40mm but that is because the length of all three filters stacked together. Sony or a filter maker needs manufacture the three in a short one piece unit that won't darken the corners even at 28mm. The old country church picture I posted today was done with this set of filters and I did very little PC work in the highlights or shadows....Jim Link to comment
jim kerr 0 Posted November 14, 2005 Excuse me,Bill, This is a great shot even with the bright high values.....Jim Link to comment
jim kerr 0 Posted November 14, 2005 Also, you may want to do as Dimitris suggest as I know he knows what he is talking about....Jim Link to comment
billfoster 0 Posted November 14, 2005 Thanks Jim! Dimitris was kind enough to send me some emails and get me started on this as I was under the impression that the Sonys couldn't do IR. He sent me a bunch of links and some great advice. I currently use a 3-stop ND and the Hoya R-72 together. I have a polarizer and I'll try to slap it on there one day and see how it goes, but I really hate vigenetting. It's a problem on the camera even with no filters. Next stop: color! I love the b&W, but some of the color IR I have seen here on PN is phenomenal. I've tried a couple, but haven't hit on a process that works for me yet. Link to comment
Guest Guest Posted December 2, 2005 Having been to Cade's Cove many times (I love it in the winter, when all the tourists are gone), I am glad to see this image, especially in IR. Cade's Cove is a unique and beautiful place. It also has the ability to trap photographers into a cookie-cutter-picture-postcard style of shooting, which you have completely avoided here. If you head back that way, think about wandering a few miles up 441 to the area around Clingman's Dome. This is very nice, indeed. Link to comment
billfoster 0 Posted December 2, 2005 Thank's JIm. I've been to the Dome many times. I just bought a graduated ND just for that but I often work evenings and missed my last chance to use it there before they closed the road for the winter. I guess I will try Look Rock with it. Link to comment
