Jack McRitchie 150 Posted November 7, 2005 Nice shot, Bill. Very engaging, simple and easily understood. I really like the composition here. Regards, Jack Link to comment
billfoster 0 Posted November 9, 2005 A little graveyard in the Smokies. I couldn't get a position where I had both stones in focus with an angle I liked so I took two and composted them. I know the paste job is a bit rough. I'll probably do a few more repairs before I try to print it. Link to comment
maarten 0 Posted November 9, 2005 Good picture, but I am not sure why this picture is not vertical. Maarten Link to comment
billfoster 0 Posted November 10, 2005 To Marteen: It's not vertical because it's crooked! The actual gravestones are crooked and I wanted to show that. It's not because I'm incapable of holding a camera straight. :-). I also felt that the crookedness lent a little dynanism to an otherwise static shot. I guess, from the ratings point of view, it's a failure. These are some of the worst ratings I've ever gotten and I didn't see this coming. I really like this picture. Oh well ... you know what? I still like it. Link to comment
Jack McRitchie 150 Posted November 10, 2005 I love it when people say things like "it's crooked" like you just overlooked the fact. There's a great picture on Gordon Logue's portfolio of a sky diver about to land and someone remarked that the horizon was slanted but he could fix it in Adobe. Now Gordon Logue's portfolio is so good he makes me want to burn my pictures and this lady actually suggests he fix the horizon line. All I could do was shake my head. Anyway, this picture (the tombstones) works great and the people who gave you low marks are all suffering from a case of rigidity of the imagination. Really like your work. maarten 0 Posted November 27, 2005 Bill, It is very well possible the stones are crooked, but there is no reference to what is not crooked. Including a real vertical line would have helped. I have the feeling that two horizontal lines in the background are also sloping a bit too much to the left. But maybe everything is crooked on this grave yard? I had a look at your portofolio and saw a lot of really great pictures there. Regarding ratings, it also happens to me: a picture that I think is quite OK only gets a very bland rating.
