derekwin 0 Posted October 20, 2005 I like the sharpness here. I would love to know how you got it that sharp. The only thing that I can say negative about it is that I would like to see more light in his eyes and that is very minor. the merits of this photo far outway that. Link to comment
anndra 0 Posted October 20, 2005 I like the sharpening - it's done in PS using a combination of shadow/highlight & smart sharpen. Link to comment

dilip_kumar_singha 0 Posted October 21, 2005 Wounderful portrait (6/6), though it appears that the contrast is over adjusted. Congratulation! Link to comment

john falkenstine 1 Posted October 22, 2005 The dead-on face shot is not particularly original. The oversharpening does not change the fact of the composition, and the lack of depth of field and the overmanipulation make it all look like "an overmanipulated image". While I too like sharp images, there is a boundary of sharpening that has been crossed here. Link to comment
frank_melchior 0 Posted October 22, 2005 The sharpness work with this man IMO, just like grain with work with some images. Well done. Link to comment
mona_chrome 0 Posted October 22, 2005 Oversharpened, over contrasted, whatever, the fact is that this, as well as the rest of the images in this persons folder containing this image, are incredibly consistent and show a committment to a style. the use of these techniques elevate these above what might be otherwise very pedestrian images--makes them somewhat superreal. i do wonder how these would hold up if they were enlarged much beyond this size, but this is what we are presented and it is a stunning visual. marco_bresciani 0 Posted October 22, 2005 Good composition, with interesting shapes create by the hair, the rain coat and the point of the sweater touching the borders. There is a slight asimmetry in the standup giving a touch of imbalance, a hint of movement. The closeup reveals fine-grain details of the model without hiding his inner spirit and strength. As many other pointed out there is a bit of oversharpening which produces some odd auras around the head. Link to comment
anndra 0 Posted October 22, 2005 John - whilst I appreciate your candour and comments about your preferences, clearly they are not my preferences. I'm content with the course I am following and there will be an evolution as I develop both my style and post-processing techniques until I am fully satisfied. Hopefully there will be work you can enjoy over time. Link to comment
stanton imaging 0 Posted October 22, 2005 Reminiscent of work by photographer Matt Hoyle of winter swimmers in Australia it has that same cold sharp look. I think its good fresh approach ... and he has a great face that has many a story to tell ..well done Link to comment
anndra 0 Posted October 22, 2005 Andres: I use a combination of shadow/highlight and smart sharpen to get to this result with variously blended desaturations along the way. Link to comment
cameron_cooper1 0 Posted October 22, 2005 Almost perfect. I like the effect of this photo. I suspect you made it "too sharp" to achieve a certain effect. I don't think Mr John Falkenstein go that. I would change just 2 minor things. The lips seem a bit too saturated, which is okay in a photo like this but it almost makes the man look like he's wearing lip stick. And his eyes need a bit more lighting. Other than that, great photo excellent effect. Link to comment
anndra 0 Posted October 22, 2005 Exactly, Cameron, and thank you for the two comments about the lips and eyes - I think you are right on both counts. Link to comment
will king 0 Posted October 23, 2005 Anndra, I like your style. Most people get what you're doing. Some don't. I like the fact that you took an ordinary portrait and made it have character. Sure, if you did not manipulate this, it would be just another boring portrait, but you did indeed manipulate it and made it interesting. There is no crime in that. I think it takes talent and creativity to do something like this. If people want a perfectly composed, unsharpened, tradional pcitures, than I say go to Sear's Portrait studio at the mall. Your photos seem to tell a story about the subject. It makes me actually think about who this guy is and what he has been through. Each wrinkle tells of a struggle...another year gone by. I don't think this technique would work on every subject, but you have done a marvelous job on this one. You should be proud of your work. Link to comment
