Dornier D0-24 flying boat, the only one left flying. It's been

retrofitted with turboprop engines, but otherwise dates from the

1940s. It is on a world tour to benefit UNICEF, and came through San

Diego, where one could buy rides at $400 a pop. Everything in the

photo, including the cooperative birds, is as it appeared through my

viewfinder, except for a few pixels of a mast that encroached on the

very bottom of the photo. Perhaps that takes this out of true

documentary, but I wouldn't go so far as to call it "fine art," the

only other category that seems to apply.

Fine shot , Barry. I may have cropped a little on the right and lower area. If only these great sunbeams could be enhanced a little... I wouldn't know how without losing the detail in the Dornier...

others may ... my mind is just wandering again...Best regards, Walter, Downunder.

One oddity about this photo is that it's actually in color. It's just that the world happened to be in grayscale at the moment I made the exposure. An interesting side-effect is that there was a very narrow histogram to work with, and unfortunately, I wasn't using raw mode. It was hard to avoid banding when I tried to set white and black points. None of this is an explanation for anything, but I suppose the moral of the story is to use raw capture, to at least get more bits to work with, or to use film.
