Grace Darling and her father, the lighthouse keeper, saved nine

survivors from the Forfarshire, which ran aground on the nearby Big

Harcar Rocks during the night of 7-8th September 1838.

The Darling's heroics lead to the formation of the Royal National

Lifeboat Institution shortly afterwards. Grace died of TB in 1842,

aged 27.

The lighthouse was built in 1825 and was manned until it was

automated in 1990, about the time this photograph was taken.

Hey! I recognise that! I was there a few months ago. It was a fascinating trip rounds the Farnes though we did not land anywhere. All the lighthouse shots I took are similar to this except the weather was misty that day.

Il bello delle belle fotografie e' che si prova la sensazione di essere in quel posto. In questa foto sento il fischio del vento e la purezza dell'aria di mare.

It would be better if not centered but you are right to not have set it upright, which give the impression that the photo is taken from a boat (perhaps is it the case ?) Regards, Henri

Just stopped by to have a look at your folders. Very nice. I like this one because of the crispness and contrast between red and blue. And the stripes.... I like stripes!

Pete, this is a great shot, yet it has an overwhelming architectural feel - this I like very much, but wonder what the lighthouse would look like if it were a little off centre in the frame, in order to include more landscape which I feel may add vital ubiety to your shot?

Regads, Nick.

Hello Nick, this is a big building, to last close to 200 years, it has to be. Big and strong. I had hoped to give a feeling of the solidity in this shot.

I've cropped this a little to one side, so that some of the island can be seen, what there is of it.

Cheers. P

I like the original picture. A light house is a strong, isolated outpost.

The first picture emphasizes that. Just an opinion.

There can never be enough light house photos.
