Trying to broaden my horizons a little, and give someone something to

gripe about. Comments welcome, of course.

hey, you know what, this is darn good. you chose an unusual and interesting reflection and rendered it well. my suggestions -- learn that transform function in ps if you are going to do this, cuz you need to correct perspective on these shots. as taken, the buildings inevitably have tilts. consider also darkening the sky to match the sky showing in the upper reflection, that creates an excellent effect.

glad you are stretching to new things, its fun, ain't it?

I actually thought about correcting the vertical perspective (that's one thing I can actually pull off, sometimes), but decided against it. I liked the lean of the building on the right looking like its depending on the one on the left, and if I had straightened the perspective, I then would have to crop, and the white part of the far right would be gone, I think. So I left that. You are right about the sky, probably. It could use a little more interest. But as the photo is taken, it is unmanipulated, and I must admit I thought it was kinda interesting. The problem, as we all know from all of our posts on the forums, is that no-one will actually visit the photo and comment. But that has not dissuaded me so far. Cheers.

yes, i have run into that problem about cropping if correcting, and i think you made the right choice if there's no more room.

two questions -- do you use a polarizer? i have found it helps with skies like this one.

second, do you shoot film or digital or both? how do you get film to the point of posting?

commenting, etc., barry there is less than in the past and sometimes its very frustrating, but if you committ to dialogue with people of like mind -- my own group is roughly 25 or so that I am in contact with in the course of a month -- you can develop some quality feedback. it may not be worth the effort (i am chained often to a computer and so it is easier for me), but it can happen. look if you want for example at a photo i just posted of two kids at a cafe -- everyone responding with words is someone i am periodically in touch with. in other words, the submission for critique yielded only numbers and no dialogue, but there is still an extensive dialogue.

i submit for critique these days to keep myself honest so to speak -- the hard numbers from strangers keeps me from deluding myself too much. but the returns in terms of meaningful feedback from that venue, it has become VERY limited. still, if you can take your lumps, it remains a good way of connecting with new people every once in awhile.

so -- let us be mate commenters. just say what you think any time. i will try to respond whenever i hear from you. and pass the word -- you're open for chatting.

I have a couple of polarizers (linear and circular), but don't have one that will fit this lens (72mm filter size). But I think polarization would have removed some of the reflections, which I would not want, although it would have helped the sky.

I only shoot film. I have a small digital for point-and-shoot stuff. Have thought about digital and looked around. I like the big Canon, but too expensive just to be outdated tomorrow. I like the Pentax ist*. I really like the Konica-Minolta 7D, with anti-shake built in to the camera. I may buy one when they make one that goes 8mp or more. I usually have the negs burned to disc when I get the film developed, and go from there. I have an Epson scanner that will do it, but my computer's pretty slow when creating a 15meg file (or more). Most of the stuff I do (especially the portraits) look MUCH better in real life than posted on Pnet. I don't care what they say - you just can't get the detail and fineness.

I leave some comments, and get some comments. I do about all I have time for, so I'm not really frustrated with the process. But there was a time (before anonymous ratings) when there were a lot more comments than now. I've kept a few images in my folder that have lots of comments, just to remind myself. Cheers.

yea, agree re impact of anonymous ratings.

but my point is, don't suffer alone. for instance, any time you want me to look at something, just leave me a note somewhere, i don't care where.

digital, well, it allows for alot of experimentation, that's the thing. doesn't cost anything and "development" is convenient. if you are worried about outdated, i'd pick up a used something (like a canon 20d or 10d) just to play with if you have the dough. a 10d can probably be had now for about 600 dollars, with a 50/1.8 and a memory card for about another 150, you are in business for example. just my two cents (which is about all i have left myself).

stay in touch you bum.
