It seems to me that the shutter speed was too slow. I guess increasing the iso would have helped. Otherwise, I find it a little busy, as there is too much stuff directly behind the man.

i was nineteen when i took this picture, i,am over fifty now ; i don,t remember the shuter speed or anything else about this shot,i just enjoy it for what it is

The shutter speed looks fine to me (seems the chickens would have shown streaking if it was a shutter issue). But it does look a little overexposed and a little soft overall, maybe the aperture was a little too wide open to allow the exposure, also resulting in a very shallow DOF hence the softness. Who knows, like you say it was a long time ago. I don't find it busy at all; the gentleman's shirt stands out nicely from the only item directly behind him (the basket) and it's composed very well. It could be argued that a tighter crop to eliminate some of the foreground and background at the top might improve it, or angled up to include more of the items at the top, but I think it's a great documentary shot. Obviously this was before avian flu was a concern ; ) Nice job, Joe; good to see you posting again (though maybe you've been posting and I missed them). Cheers! James
