At first I thought the chalk was piercing the body of a fish but then when I saw the title I thought it was original. Amy H

thanks everyone for the great comments

jonathan - the strobe is called a microflash, which is about a microsecond length exposure time.

i made a custom trigger for bullet photography, details of which are here

besides those things, it's just a normal camera and a normal rifle :)

mustafa - generally with shots like this the shutter speed is around 30", you just leave it open with the lights all off, set up the gun, shoot the rifle which triggers the trigger, which triggers the strobe to go on for a microsecond. so you could say it's a microsecond exposure, but it really requires no special equipment.

thanks again for looking everyone. -jeff

When I saw this at first I thought a piece of Art that looked like a fish...read the title and thought original. Curious as to how many times it took to get this. Very original...great colors. Well done!

Jeff, You have done an excellent job of capturing an event of short duration.

It IS a green fish with red teeth biting the purple chalk...

Seeing your shot encourages me to dust off some ideas I've planned but never got around to trying: shooting a raw egg or food coloured ice targets or three balloons in a row filled separately with red, yellow and blue paint powder, and some more light bulb experiments.

I look forward to seeing more of your work.

What a fascinating image! How clever that you chose these varied colors and how brilliant the final result is! I am inspired; thank you for sharing!
