robertbrown 1 Posted September 29, 2005 Comments appreciated on this photo of a rock at an alkali lake. I'm not happy with the rock top even with the horizon, but this was the best angle I could get (next time I'll bring a tall stepladder!). Link to comment
salvatore.mele 1 Posted September 29, 2005 I wish you had a stepladder for the B&W version... I cannot help comparing the two, and they pull me in different directions. The B&W gives a great sense of isolation, but for the land, as I wrote there. Here, in this feast of colours, no isolation comes to mind. Conversely, the clouds -and their reflections- become really eye-catching. The stripe of warm pinkish sand works nicely to separate them and... what the heck is that rock doing in this nice landscape? Does not work... p.s. Glad to see you back posting. Loved your trailer. mona_chrome 0 Posted September 30, 2005 I love this part of Oregon--I usually spend most of my time sinking in the mud and trying to get out, so I'm impressed that you got in this close. you are right, the tangency of the rock with the horizon doesn't work here. i think this shot and the trailer shot are attempting to create a similar mood of isolation, but the trailer does it more effectively. Maybe a ladder would help, but my feeling is that it is not just the horizon tangency. I am struggling with exactly what might help. The trailer is an icon in and of itself and carries much more "content" with it than does a rock, so maybe it is just that somehow you would need to make that rock carry that kind of dynamic. I don't think I am saying it right, but hopefully you can get some sense of what I am trying to say. Link to comment
robertbrown 1 Posted October 4, 2005 Salvatore, thanks for you comments. I'm just taking a little PN break for a while. Hope you are well. Mona, thanks for the comment and I understand exactly what you are talking about. Do you have a portfolio somewhere to see? I'd like to see what you shoot. I love the empty areas east of the Cascades: wish I could spend 6 months or so just exploring all the out of the way places! Link to comment
