Beautiful tonalities, really. Background and pose work very well.

The concept is good, but the girl is sitting in a very irregular, cluttered environment which I find very distracting. Zooming in closer to cut out the clutter could have made a huge difference. While some folks would recommend a crop, the resulting loss of resolution which make things worse AND there's just too much "stuff" around her upper body and face.

Sorry, no critiques from me. I especially like the wonderful colors blend. The whole composition is really beautiful.

John, regarding the clutter... isn't that part of the package when it comes to 'Street' photography? Granted, this shot is contrived so perhaps the photographer did have more control over the end product that normal street phtotogrpahy would allow for, but the choice of lens is a 50 prime in this instance, so zooming (in this case, sitting at her table) would spoil the illusion that this is a candid shot. That's my thoughts anhow.

Colors scenery and the romantic, dreamy touch

In some cases clutter, yes. But, what is the intent...the intended "style" of the photographer? Frankly I don't know. My point was that the image could be more powerful with LESS. Is this achievable in street photography. Well, its NOT easy. My recent attempts at street photography in Mexico resulted in a huge number of images with the noted clutter..

I've yet to find the courage for serious street work, so am in awe of anyone who can pull it off.

Wonderful capture, very moody. There is a sense of melancholia. I like the framing a lot, environment works in favor of the image in this case.

Nice 'lifestyle' shot. Perhaps just a little untidy, but I could imagine seeing this in a trendy 'city break' travel brochure. I like the muted tones and window light. Best wishes.

...when I say untidy, I mean little things like the coffee drip on the cup that I find distracting and not in tune with the 'feel' of the image. And (to a much lesser extent) the strong dark shadow of another person behind the woman's head. Still a lovely-looking shot though.

I dont think the environment is distracting, etc. On the contrary, it really creates the whole feeling of the picture. Try to imagine how the picture would look like with the same model and pose (even the table if you like) but with a plain unicolor background... I bet you would think that the photographer could not comunicate with the model. Here, even if it is staged, the picture invites you to create the story arround the girl... The "clutter" is what makes it look real. In movies, you pay the "set dresser" aka prop person, thousands to create appropriate clutter.

Can't believe what I just read about the drop on the coffee cup. :-) I would agree if this would be an ad for a coffee brand, but as I see it, it's a life scene...

 

But there is indeed, to me as well, an untidy feel - in terms of colors only. A white balance mistake that was left uncorrected on purpose ? Or PShop coloring ? I don't know, but I hope we will hear it from the photographer.

 

While I really like her posture and expression, as well as the composition, this picture, for me, is a miss in terms of colors - although I have to acknowledge that there is a trend for such fancy colors for afew decades now. It just isn't my taste: ok for studio work, imo, but it feels overdone for this subject matter.

 

Still a good shot, but what a fantastic B&W it could be ! With the author's permission, I'd like to try to convert this to a nicely toned bw, and perhaps post it here. Regards, and congrats for everything besides the colors.

I think the available light, as well as the use of color and dof, come together beautifully in this. Contrary to what Marc and John have said, I think the colors aren't untidy at all. The red table leads me into the model's coloring (in fact, blondes in red are a nice combination), and the warm tones in the sort of curtain-rod thing (don't know what to call it) on the left work well with a) the red table and b) the blue tones in the upper portion. What's interesting to me also is how the blue and the red are the same sort of temperature so they don't clash but provide a nice complementarity; what's also interesting to me is that, whether this was set up or not, the use of color in a non-studio setting really came together--but then again, I guess we can thank the restaurant's decorators for that. There's also a nice complementarity in the circular shapes/vertical lines. Jochen's whole folder has this very distinct, original vision, and his style is similar to (but not derivative of) much of the very original and provocative working coming out of Eastern Europe. This is something I really desire to follow.
