waltchapman 0 Posted September 6, 2005 An abandoned church I found while driving around on the back roads of southwest Iowa. I did a levels adjustment and crop. Are the details to light or dark? Comments and suggestions are welcomed. Thank You. Link to comment
Guest Guest Posted September 6, 2005 the sky and roof are quite light. It would benefit from having the power lines cloned out in the sky. What a subject! A pity it was abandoned! I hope you're close enough to visit here once in a while and capture different times of day. Link to comment
waltchapman 0 Posted September 6, 2005 Thanks for the comment Kim. I may do that on the cloning out the power lines. The roof was faded out white paint on tin, the sun was bright and behind when the picture was taken. And yes it is close enough to try again on differnet times of the day. I think a late afternoon shot may do it. Will work on it. Thanks Link to comment
ken dennis 0 Posted September 6, 2005 Walt! As Kim said! I also like the angle you used, looking at the top of the steeple you can see a perfect alignment of the corner, a very pleasing angle from this view point! One thing I would like to add that I think you would be pleased with. a shot of this in the winter, the bleakness of winter would blend with the blight of the structure, If your close enough to this, wait for a day after a snow, and just about sundown or late during an overcast day, you would want to use a polarizing filter to cut some of the glare the snow will cause, and don't be afraid to put it over a UV filter, shoot at about f11 - f16 or greater depending on how much DOF you want, and keep the scene just a tad dark, but not so dark as to loose detail in the shadows, if possible step back away about 30 to 50 feet further to include a little more of its surroundings so the building and the landscape become as one and I think you would have a winner with this old church! Have fun! Ken. Link to comment
waltchapman 0 Posted September 6, 2005 Ken, thanks I'll look into doing that. With the leaves down it would add to the background and surroundings. Link to comment
ken dennis 0 Posted September 6, 2005 I love old structures like this one, they are fading fast as a combination of people tearing them down either for new construction or vandalism, and nature also taking its toll! We used to have a lot of old abandoned structures like this one here in Indiana, but now they are becoming fewer with each years passing! Good luck and have fun! Ken. Link to comment
Guest Guest Posted September 7, 2005 This is such a beautiful church, too. I look forward to seeing it through your camera eyes in different seasons! Link to comment
