Confrontation

elaine_roberts1

As the crowd began to break up, the man on the left got into a rather heated argument with a number of other protesters about - of all things -abortion. I found myself practically on top of them - literally could not back any further away while taking this photo. (KKK rally and counter-demonstration). Of course, sorting through the 7 rolls of film I shot there - I discovered that I had accidentally thrown away the negative. All I have now is a slide made from the print...

Please comment and rate this photo. I like it a lot and feel it

really captures the tension in the air between these two. What do you

think? Thank you, Elaine

While this isn't "artistic," the photo does show a lot of emotion, and some symbolism about conflict. It would be more interesting in a series, perhaps on conflict.

I agree, a good show of emotion and conflict. I think this photo would be more artistically appealing if a shallow depth of field was used to blur the people in the background. This would highlight the conflict and keep the background from distracting the eye.

In this type of photo you don't have time to be artistic. It might be better with the background faces blurred, but there's something about all those sunglasses - suggest ppl blinded, ppl who have lost their personality in the passion of argument? And I love than big pointing hand in the centre of the pic. And I'm sick of pretty piccies of sunsets.

I find it very refreshing that the issue of the "debate" was not race! One might assume this because of the skin colors of the main subjects. Also, in this case, I'm glad the others in the back are in focus... adds to the overall effect, and there is a feeling that the viewer (or photographer) is uncomfortably close to the tension. Great shot!

I especially like the onlookers obvious focus on the conflict - I'm always in awe of the photogs that can have the elan/composure/detachment to capture emotionally charged moments. To me this photo has it's place in a newspaper article - a photo that says a thousand words.

Yes. Good shot. Would have been published.

But my guess is if this photograph had been published in the People's Republic of Minnesota, the mass media there would not have given the true subject of the debate. Or if they had, they would have couched it in terms like "anti-choice protestor terrorizes pro-choice defender."

A lot of editors would like a shot like this. I shoot a lot of photojournalism (though you can't tell be looking at my portfolio here) having a greatt protest "in your face" style shot will please just about any news editor.

my first impression was: scary to hold the camera so near those guys. but it says something positive about you, you are willing to take the risk.

the second was: now that you have done it, it is an amazing picture representing instincts, animal behaviour, misunderstanding, intolerance, ... how difficult it is to communicate!

Elaine, fantastic emotion you captured and gutsy to say the least, although they seem to be at each other than worrying about your capturing them. Although a shallow DOF would have worked as to blurring the background people away, an individual above correctly stated that there probably wasn;t sufficient time to think about it.

I think it's a great news shot. Be blowed with art or DOF, in these situations, it's just about "the moment". "the energy", and that's what you got.

Perhaps the rating system here doesn't have the right categories to do justice to this type of photography, but you know you did well.

It reminds me a lot of a picture of an Israeli soldier in the face of a Palestinian protestor a couple of years back. It won a press award of some kind.
