View from the Parco della Rememberanza. First "island" is Nisida and second is Monte di Procida (both capes). Behind are the actual islands of Procida and Ischia.

Hi Bill. The typical haze is not a problem, indeed it spices up the sunset. I like the plant to the L, balancing in some sorts the hill to the R, even though the latter is a bit dominant.

The name of the island in the foreground linked by the causeway to the land is Nisida. Actually a real island, even though a song call it "The island no one knows about". A beautiful place where you cannot go since it hosts a prison and a navy base.

Thanks, Salvatore, that was a typo when I called Nisida Ischia in the caption. I actually worked a bit on Nisida (at the navy base) and on Ischia a long time ago. If they would ever clean the beach at Bagnoli (there have been plans for years but nothing ever happens) it would be one of the most beautiful areas in Campania. However, I still say it's not an island anymore; connected by a causeway = not an island! :-)

Bill,

funny to see that you've been in a place of my hometown where I could not go, unless charged with some crime...(the prison, I mean).

When were you there? Things have changed fast: almost all of the industrial complex in front of Nisida is gone, by now. Part of it is retained as industrial archeology. Much is discussed about what to do with that space. There was a bid to host the 2007 America's Cup, but did not go through. In the industrial sheds right on the beach, a scientific outreach centre has been recently thriving. The derelict piers you were observing in the bay -once used to carry metals to the smelting facilities- will be fixed: one has become a nice walkway on the sea.

The problem of the beach (and most of the water) is the meter or so of heavy metals which the fumes of the smelting have deposited over decades... a superficial clean-up will never suffice.

Hi Salvatore, I didn't know you were from Naples. I lived there for years (Piazza Arenella) and still go every 3 months or so. I was last there just a couple months ago. Yes, the Citta della Sicenza is wonderful and they have done a few things with the area (like the Neopolis festival) ... but, as you note it has a long way to go and the pollution is extreme. On the whole though, Naples is a beautiful, vibrant and exciting city and I wish more people saw the city instead of only using it to see Pompeii or Capri. PS: If it makes you feel better, I tried to get inside Castel Capuana to take pictures of a chapel in there about a dozen times and never made it in.
