"At the Sea-Side" - on a quiet evening mother and child come down to the beach and as every day sit down at one of the boats, patiently waiting. On the horizon there are several fishing boats slowly approaching the coast.

For this photo I used the natural remaining daylight, no flash. Long time exposure with tripod. F8 1/2 second (estimated). Spot metering. Frame added 27th Oct. 2001 without making changes to photograph.

Very peaceful. A nice moment of everyday life you captured. It touches me because it is simple and authentic. Good work. And the consumer film you used did a good job, too.

John, thanks for asking. Well I say "basic" because when I took this photo, I felt touched. It reminded me that no matter where you go, there are always certain human gestures and expressions which are independent of language, cultural background, life-style or definition of "family" - simple, common or just human. I can't think of a more suitable term right now.

Chuck, by the way, I have changed the title of the photo.

A good observation Juergen. A child seeking security, a mothers reassurance. Universal behaviours, and touching all the more when you see it placed in such a peaceful setting. I like the mothers gaze which shows she is attentive, and also I like the tilt & angle of the boat. Composition & light is good too.

Juergen says "I felt touched" - then in the image we have touch, and emotionally this is also a tactile image. At first I thought you had a white-out in the background, but closer inspection reveals a subtle contrast between sea and sky that I enjoy.

Sometimes basic is best - this is one of those times.

Masterpiece! Fine-arts (precisely Renaissance) composition and colors, only the figures and some details on the boat are contemporary. Anyway, all these apparently divergent elements are giving together a "no age" character to this photo! 2x10

What a lovely scene, very moving! Excellent composition, the lighting serves the meaning of this wonderful picture very well.
