hanna_cowpe 0 Posted August 24, 2005 More engineering than architecture but a masterpiece all the same...the trestle that is. Link to comment

hanna_cowpe 0 Posted August 25, 2005 Thanks for commenting. Biliana, this is actually all wood structure. Trestles were generally built from wood and spanned river canyons for trains. Link to comment
colin carron 58,916 Posted September 1, 2005 A nice old bit of bridge engineering. Was it built for rail or road? Your composition is nice and peaceful with the reflected image in the water. I wonder whether the angle could have allowed the house to be a bigger part of the shot ? There were quite a few of these timber trestles built for the early railways in UK but they have almost all been replaced in more permanent materials or left to rot. Nice to see. Link to comment
Landrum Kelly 64 Posted September 2, 2005 Hi, Water Woman. This is very nice--nice subject, nice treatment. There is a bit more sky reflected than might be ideal, perhaps, but I like the overall effect. --Lannie Link to comment
hanna_cowpe 0 Posted September 2, 2005 Okay, so Colin wants more house and Lannie wants less sky reflection so I should have raised the camera a little. That would have placed the trestle right in the middle, horizontally. I guess that would work, albeit a little dark. Colin, this was a railway line but is now a cycle and walkway. We had a series of these wooden trestles in the interior of British Columbia but unfortunately all but a few were destroyed in a rash of forest fires two years ago. I think the Brits had the right idea using brick and iron for theirs. Thankyou both for visiting. Link to comment
colin carron 58,916 Posted September 16, 2005 I would keep the reflection (sorry Lannie!) but jus use a slightly wider angle and crop for the width if necessary. Link to comment
bradkim 8 Posted September 22, 2005 Hanna, I like this picture as it is..... Your composition is excellent. I think your inclusion of the reflected sky at the bottom prevented this image from becoming too tight, too heavy...., providing the image with a nice breathing room. Link to comment
loldhoff 0 Posted October 3, 2005 Hi Hanna. I know this bridge well, as I often bike over the Selkirk. I must tell you that I'm totally envious of this photo as I've taken many shots of this lovely bridge but this is one I wish I had taken. I have uploaded my best effort of this bridge for you to have a look at and maybe comment? Many of your Victoria scenes are familiar places to me. Your portfolio is beautiful. loldhoff 0 Posted October 24, 2005 Hello Hanna. Thank you for your encouraging comment on my effort the trestle. I agree with you that the bridge always looks different, light, water reflection ... etc. Not very often that the water there is this still and that totally makes this photo stand out. Good job! Guest Guest Posted February 11, 2006 Wow, I particularly like this one. You've captured the reflection perfectly, and the pattern formed by the trestles and their reflection is just mesmerizing. Nice conversion, too. Bravo. Link to comment
hanna_cowpe 0 Posted February 13, 2006 Chris, thanks for your encouraging comments on this and my other images you've looked at today. I'm pleased you've delved a bit to some older uploads. This is my view when I'm lumbering on the treadmill at the local gym - I need something to get my mind off the hard work. There is usually only a short time when the water is calm before the tide turns and upsets the reflections. There's another more distant view in colour somewhere else in my portfolio. Link to comment
Guest Guest Posted February 19, 2006 This is the view from your gym? Hm, maybe I should move.... Link to comment
