Did you hike up to this vantage point or was this taken by air? The added background helps make this image. At first glance it seems rather plain and uninteresting, but know this is the lava dome I want to see even more detail and view a larger image.

This shot was from 5 miles away at Johnston Ridge Observatory. I was using a 75-300mm Lens at 170mm. One could ride up there in a helicopter and get within 1000 feet of the dome for $125.00 (I do not think they will open the windows for clear pictures, and you cannot pick your seat). Or, one could charter a private helicopter for several thousand. It would be a view of a lifetime.

Hello Stephen, Is this a crop? 5 miles away with a 300 mm seems a big ask. The shot is fascinating, but pehaps could do with more contrast (polariser?)as suggested for the general landscape shot and perhaps a little more sharpening.

I particularly like the shot "shipwreck" and Mt Adams.

Best wishes. Peter

This is as shot. The only post-processing I did was adjust the levels and reduce the size. I am still learining how to use filters (unsharp mask, etc.). A mountain 5 miles away (even when missing the upper 1300+ feet) is huge. The field of view of a 300mm lens @170mm is 26 deg, which equates to 12263 ft wide or so at 5 miles. Thank you for your comments. Also, to give you some perspective here is a link to a shot at 40mm: http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=3598478
