Guest Guest Posted August 2, 2005 Dang, what is that about 30 scratch offs? I hope he had some winners. I really like the composition and that you captured his "focus". I might have cropped a bit off the top (down to the table perhaps). Since this was illegal gambling, I think any proceeds should be used for the "greater good". I think a donation to a certain fund might be in order here. Link to comment
robertbrown 1 Posted August 2, 2005 Thanks. My father thought it would be funny to give my son some scratch-offs for his birthday--40 of them. Link to comment
jana 1 Posted August 2, 2005 Robert, very well seen. You could try cropping the image at the top, just at the table height. I think the composition would be tighter. thanks Jana Link to comment
Guest Guest Posted August 2, 2005 I'm not convinced about the crop to the table top although I think down to just above the tops of the chairs might be nice but when you take the top off with the streamers and balloon the shot looses a bit of context. I'm assuming this young boy is being led to crime in celebration of something. Maybe the scratchers were a gift (funky monkeys are always nicer to me by the way) Anyway, without the party decorations the mood/context is lost. Knicki Please deposit the winnings plus 25% blackmail fee into the Laurie/Knicki fund pronto or this photo is getting forwarded to the A.P.D. Link to comment
kibbutz_luc 0 Posted August 2, 2005 Sometimes the elders have a strange humour! However, I think it's very distracting anything farther tha the boy... you should play with Depth Of Field , to focus more on the boy or more on the "row" of "illegal gambling sin-filled scratchy" Bye...good idea ( yours, not your father's one ! ) Link to comment
robertbrown 1 Posted August 3, 2005 Laurie and Jana, I'll try cropping the top. Laurie and Knicki, you won't get any of my son's winnings. Well, actually, it was losings. His Grandpa was going to give him either $40 in cash or $40 in scratch-offs for his birthday. He chose the scratch-offs and got $33 . . . so he lost $7, but said it was worth it! His twin sister did the smart thing and took the cash. Luca, this was shot very quickly in pretty low light: lower than it looks in this photo (ISO 1600 @ f5.6). I don't use flash. I do wish I would have focussed in closer so some of the scratch-offs were sharper. Thanks for your comment. Link to comment
Guest Guest Posted August 3, 2005 I'm glad you didn't crop it; then I wouldn't get to see the beautiful antique furniture, pictures, and the lovely molding on what looks like an elegant old house! Link to comment
Guest Guest Posted August 3, 2005 Your boy's pretty cute, too! Besides photography, I also have a weakness for antique furniture and wood floors and pretty, old houses, so this photo is a bonus for me. Link to comment
robertbrown 1 Posted August 10, 2005 Well, Kim (or anyone else), if you're ever in Astoria, I'd be happy to give you a tour. I own a house on the National Historic Register, and the long-time home to one of Oregon's governers and a US Senator (Kennedy and Ford both visited here). A lot of hardwood and some antiques and piles of books and too much photography junk . . . M, if I had a chance to re-shoot this I'd make some better decisions on how to frame this. Thanks for your input--much appreciated. Link to comment
Guest Guest Posted August 10, 2005 Sounds like a great house! If I ever visit, I'll look you up! Link to comment
Guest Guest Posted August 10, 2005 Bob, Just go out and buy him 40 more scratch offs. Thanks for the invite. I look forward to a tour the next time I'm passing through Astoria. Link to comment
robertbrown 1 Posted August 11, 2005 Laurie, while the scratch off thing is kind of funny, I've never bought a lottery ticket or scratch-off--I just don't see the fun in it! My son and father, however, have a different view on the subject. By the way, you are more than welcome to a full tour . . . . Link to comment
