A shot taken in the late evening in the Lofoten Island, Norway.

The scene and the light gave me a feeling of quiet, of rest, that

these fishing boat seem to deserve after the daily hardship of the

open sea.

Does it tell the same to you?

Comments, advises and eventually ratings, are welcome.

Salvatore, this is an attractive shot and you've caught the scene in a nice warm light. I especially like the the light at the top of the peak at the right. My only wish is that the left side of this had a little more light.

By the way, how was your trip? I see you've gone digital--how did you like the new camera?

Wonderful shot. I really love the contrast between the ships-village and the dark mountains.

Really really amazing.

Salvatore, welcome back. I really like this shot. The spotlighting on the boats with the ominous presence of the mountains really works, and the single peak with light is a bonus.

marvellous! I love this streak of light on the boats and houses. You have been to Norway? So I guess we will get to see LOTS of beautiful pictures.

Nicely controlled highlights ... I'd prefer to bring out the shadows just a tad more, though.

BTW, welcome to the world of digital photography.

Welcome back Salvatore, I've been following the logs. Whatever bad things you said about the Scottish climate just because you can't figure out where to put you're big, clumsy feet will be forgiven as long as you got some nice pics of the druid girls :-)

As for the picture, the formation and closeness of the boats reminds me of ducklings settling behind their mother after a hard day at the pond. The heavy ripple foreground provides a good frame for the boats in the smoother part. Have to disagree with Robert on the lighting. The darker area on the left is keeping my attention where it should be, but there's still enough detail in the background to find interest in it once I'm finished with the main subject.

Beautiful light. I would leave the balance of light and dark substantially as it is though possibly try to bring up the detail in the mountains. This looks like a shot that would benefit from being printed as large as it will go.

This is great. I regret I cannot see better the mountains behind !

Now I view it from home. I can see better the subtle shadow play. This is wonderful. From my office desk, the background was just so dark ... I had to watch the version posted by this fellow commenter to appreciate it ... definitely a display issue !

Cheers,

Thanks for the positive feedback on this image, for your welcoming me back and for all your comments. Let me try to address some points:

Vince, Arthur & Bob I composed this with carefully underexposing the mountain and concentrating in getting the boats shine. The reason was to have them as the subject in a shiny "<" wrapped in a dark "Z". The shape was ment to suggest motion, even if they are still, and the fact that in a few hours they would be out again. In this respect, I find your -correct- suggestion of more light in the mountains would make me lose this illusion of unbalanced moment of quiet.

Stephan I am impressed someone actually read that prose of mine... as for she-druids, they're like vampires... no hope to get a picture of them!

D70 I've mixed feelings about this digital thing altogether. First, my 20mm and 50mm ways of seing a scene before putting the camera in front of my eye are badly frustrated. Second, there are too many knobs, bells and whistles... I'm using it as a FM2n anyhow. Third, I better do not comment on the viewfinder...but I was warned. As for making the workflow simpler, and indulging in the pleasures of braketing -since the camera and me still dislike each other exposure methods-, that's just great!

Salvatore, The light here is beatuful. I like the transition from dark to light not only from top to bottom but from left to right. As Bob pointed out, the gently lit peak in the upper right is terrific.

How fortunate that the bottom paint on each of the boats was in a different, nearly primary color. For me, that's what really makes this image.

It's nice to have you back!

Hello Salvatore

The light here is wonderous. The darkened mountains provide an admirable backdrop to those beautifully lit up and colourful boats.

Very pleasing indeed!

Regards, Nick.

A.K., Laurie, I never passed back through this image to thank you... I'm glad you like the lit peak. Seeing this image now brings back so many fond memories from my days on the Imram.

Nicholas, thanks for commenting on this and many other of my shots.
