Kauai Morning

patrick_d_smith

This taro field is in the small town of Hanalei. Taro is used by the native Hawaiians to make poi, a paste-like substance which was a staple in the diet 100 years ago. Today, taro fields have mostly been replaced by sugar cane, pineapple, and other more tasty crops.Taken as the sun rose. The trade winds pick up about 10 minutes after sunrise so there is a very narrow window of opportunity to catch still and reflective water. 5 minutes after this photo was taken, it was windy and pouring rain for about 10 minutes. Then it was sunny and windy.5 miles behind the left-hand peak is the wettest place on the planet, where over 440 inches of rain fall per year. This field gets only about 120 inches per year!Canon 350d (XT) Canon 17-40L @171/2 second exposure @F22

fantastic use of the foreground elements, so random but they work so well together with the leaves and shadows. Lovely image. Only improvement could be from more colour in the sky...

I really like this shot. The mountains, sunrise, and reflection are great. The small house draws my eye in and takes away from the otherwise natural scene, however, I'm not sure the was a way around it.

Wonderful image Patrick. In the spirit of constructive feedback, the top feels just a little cramped to me, but everything else - light, focus, and a spectacular foreground, looks spot on.

cheers,

John.

Nice photo! I come to Kauai once a year for the last 5 years, and always got kick out on this Taro field by the farmers while I’m trying taking the picture.
