Ah...the famous Ian Anderson backscratcher. Seriously, another great concert shot! I hope you decide to publish these, I would definitely buy the book. Please put up some of the Rory Gallagher shots, as it's close to the tenth anniversary of his death (he died on June 14, 1995 at 47 years of age).

Neal, I, personally am not a rock fan. But I can see reasons for enjoying your photos, shows a lot of power/emotion, and I do hear those drums and guitars. Well done....Jim

you've some classic images in your portfolio and i look forward to seeing more. out of interest, do you shoot concerts still and if so using digital? if you had the chance to go back and shoor these gigs again in digital, do you think you'd have got better end results?

Yes... but not from digital as much as better metering and faster focusing. All the 'concerts' were shot all MANUAL focusing and metering (either with an Olympus OM-1 with the match ring and needle or with a Pentax Super ME): By being able to not worry so much about these aspects (with the newer camera features, I believe I could have gotten even better images) The B/Ws were shot with Kodak Tri-X which provides quite a bit of latitude in the processing and the colors were were shot with Kodak Ectachrome which provide no latitude.. For presentation each image (negative/slide) was scanned with a Canon Canoscan 2710 (capturing every pixel I can) and touched up in PSv.6 so, in a way, these are partly digital. The only touch up so speak of was what could be done in a wet processing room.. tantamount to dodging and burning, cropping and a little color correction.. BUT certainly for future concerts, I'll be packing my sporty new Pentax *ist DS.

i use a 20D and L lenses but still use manual focusing, and manual exposure at almost every gig at some point. were you shooting for magazines/newspapers back in the 70's with all your classics here?

I just shoot for fun.. do you think you can get better results with manual focusing? I find many of the artists to be dynamic and an autofocus a benefit when the action heats up. Maybe it is just personal preference.

in dark venues where i have to use really slow shutter speeds sometime pre-focusing is the best option then wait till the artist moves into the line of focus. i look forward to seeing some of your more recent music photos too
