Eagle Falls Evening, Emerald Bay

buck forester

Reposted, I forgot to add a border. This is my first upload from my new 20D camera. My ISO setting was 100, my f-stop was I forget but I wanted the shutter speed quick enough to capture some detail but still show a strong sense of motion. This was late evening at peak sunset under a colorful sky filled with big thunderheads. I love this camera but I won't be tossin' my Velvia 50 any time soon!

Great light... marvellous contrast between the gentle mood of the background and the powerful, almost violent power of the water...good stuff.

I went up to Lake Tahoe the other day after work to try out my new

Canon 20D. I'm not gonna toss my beloved Velvia 50, no way jose, but

I sure do like this camera. But even more so I like pointing it at

pretty stuff. And even more than that I like BEING there! Woo

hoo! :^D I shot this scene in the evening at ISO 100 using an f-

stop, I just can't remember which one. I wanted to show powerful

motion in the water but also provide some detail. I used a 2-stop

hard GND to keep the color in the thunder clouds. If the photo looks

slightly tilted to the right it's an opticial illusion caused by the

angle of the bay coming off the main lake. The leveling bubble on my

tripod was level. Any comments/suggestions welcomed! Gracias

amigos' and amigas'!

The power of the water juxtaposed against the peacefulness of the lake and sunset is tremendous. chris

Beautiful light. I like the energy of the water and the peacefulness of the bay, but the tight crop makes me feel as if I'm falling down the falls. While this creates tension, I would be interested in seeing a looser crop, perhaps stones in the foreground?

Thanks for the comments!

Olivia, I know what you mean, but that 17-40mm I use on my film camera is 1.6x tighter on my digital, dang it! :^D I do have another version with a strong foreground rock, I'll upload it later to see if it's more to your compositional liking. Thanks for taking the time to comment!

And whoever gave this a 1/1, that's fine, but care to at least briefly explain why you disliked it so much? I'd be interested in what you have to say.

Very unusual perspective. Looking down the falls like that with the lake in the background. That is what makes your shot so different IMO! Wonderful pastels too. Nice work!

This is a stunning photo. Great soft colors and the perspective is fantastic. What a nice spot to join the sunset. Well done.

Excellent shooting Brian. My first thought was ooh fuji velvia what a treat, amazing how far digital has moved on. This is a beaut.

I lived in Tahoe for five years and rarely saw the intense color / amount of water that you experienced and captured on this day. Excellent work!

Buck, I have followed your work for a while now ,and adore your velvia work. I heard on fredmiranda that you were contemplating a MF system, what made you opt for digital? Well, the answer may lie in the quality of this shot, pure excellence.

Thanks everyone for the comments, mucho appreciatedo!

Trevor, I didn't plan on going digital, but the 20D was given to me as a gift. It's a lot of fun and I love it, but I don't plan on having it replace my Velvia and I still hope to get a Pentax 67II medium format camera to lug around the wilderness as well.

Great shot Buck. Reminds me of the Galen Rowell shot of the same place. What a tribute!
