Barn Swallow in flight!

greglyon

I spent an hour or so trying to capture some barn swallows in flight. It's fun, but quite difficult! I got 2 or 3 near keepers out of nearly 100 shots taken. I used D70 + 80-200. Sometimes with TC14e. I changed focus modes frequently from AF-S to AF-C, Dynamic to Single point, and tried Closest subject too. I'm going to have to be more scientific next time because I don't really know which worked best. In photoshop I applied unsharp mask (110,0.5,0).

I 'burned' through nearly 100 shots to get 2 good ones and a couple

heartbreaker near misses. Yet I consider it quite successful at that

low ratio. These guys are FAST!

I'm thinking of trying flash too next time, what do you think?

Great shot. Just wish I could see the birds eye but I like the water relections and the comp of the bird.

Yes, these guys are very fast! Your flash probably won't have enough time to recharge; therefore, it may be better to shoot them without the flash. You did catch a very good one there! Well done!

Greg, nice shot. The reflections off the ripples in the water make for an interesting background. Yep your keep-to-throw-away ratio sounds about right for bird photography. Fun though, isn't it.

I don't think you'll have much luck with the flash with birds in flight. It's not so much the recycle time. If you have the flash on a lower power it will keep up with a rapid fire. The problem is the much slower shutter speeds you have to use. I'm going to add you to my interesting list though to see if you have any luck.

Again, nice shot. All the best.
