I like the concept, but I would like to see the entire baby's eye. Also the baby's arm and chest appear very blotchy, is this intentional or file compression? The woman's profile is wonderful.

Jayme....yes....you're right about the blotches. This was an unintended shot (mom was just soothing the baby as the baby was not enjoying her day in the spotlight.) My experience with children....especially newborns, is that the "keeper shots" are the quiet moments between mother and child.)This shot was away from the lights and studio set up. Any suggestions for the low light spotting would be appreciated.

Tiffany, really a very wonderful keeper here, I think you are right, keeper moments come by when we are even away from the camera!!! But I love this picture, expressions well captured!! 7/7

This shot made me peek at your portfolio - ok, I looked through all of the folders. LOVE the people shots, especially self and Kara. Glad I stumbled across you. I'd like to know how you make some of your digital shots look filmy.

Tiffany- Low light is always a problem. I hope you don't mind, but I ran this through "Neat Image" and played in layers in PS to help with the blotching. I love the detail in the mother & childs face so I really didn't mess with that, just the chest and arm. Here's the result.

nice job, Jayme. I have poorman's PS aka "elements", so I am pretty limited, but layering is accessable. May I ask what you did in the layers?

Anslee...(very cool name, btw) If you point out a specific image with "film quality", I can tell you how I got it. I have been playing with digital for less than a year, so what I do is pretty much still experimental. I do know that my love of the "film look" kept me from digital for a long time. So, I have tried, failed, tried and sort of succeeded in getting digital to have a feel and look that is similar to my film images. Thank you for taking the time to look through my work.

How about the Kara 1 shot - not the coloring but the overall effect? I'm thinking of going back to shooting (some) film. Think I got too wrapped up in the convenience of digital. Feel free to email if you'd rather not take up room here. Thanks. colophotojunkie@hotmail.com

Tiffany- What I did was filter the image in Neat Image, then applied a layer mask to the filtered copy and filled with black. Then I took the paint brush and painted with white over the areas I wanted to smooth, the babies chest & arm. I did this so I could retain the detail and texture in their faces, especially the mother's.

Using layers in PS is something that takes a while to understand the concept and is hard to explain. But if someone shows you how it only takes a few minutes to understand and then the sky is the limit as to what you can do in PS. Hope this helps.

I think that more than any tech info I can give you, here is the original...

Basically, I had a very dark image that I wanted to save. The D70 favors reds, so I did the auto correct....desaturated and then played with the color levels on the highlights, mids and shadows. I cloned a bit under her eyes to relieve the shadows. I believe I used my manual 90mm tamron lens for this shot which I think is the superb portrait lens. But as you can see from the original, the underexposure seemed to lend itself to the final image. A lot of luck and a drop of skill.

I don't have 'neat image', but I discovered some of layers capabilities about 8 months ago. It really opened up some doors for me (most of my digital manipulations are with layers). I haven't tried it in the capacity that you described, but your results are quite impressive. I will play with them a bit more since I do favor low light.

Thanks for sharing that and thanks for the example. It looks much better.
