I think that you captured an amazing moment. I have have never had such a clear view of an owl in the wild, let alone get a chance to photograph one. You are very lucky.

I would not look at the ratings you got as a reflection of the quality of this photo. Taking a photo of an animal in the zoo is very different from taking a photo of one in the wild.

.On the purely photographic side, you may want to put a little photoshop effort into brightening the photo up a little, probably selectively. It comes across a little dark to me.
