Yeow- fantastic detail, perfect, smack-on exposure. That's almost ridiculous. Are you gonna tell me how you're getting this close, or do I have to leave peanut butter out for YOU, too?

Hi David, aahhh the ratings! I'm on a ratings downer at the moment. I'm just trying to ignore them and, as a result, I haven't been giving that many. Odd but with the new setup if I rate your picture it may prevent you from going to the TRP, something I don't want to do. I don't have any visions of my work getting there but yours will.

Still, if any little birdie picture is worth 7's this one certainly is. Ratings or no, your's, Christopher's and Laurie's efforts are hugely impressive.

Keep up the 7/7-worthy work :o) All the best.

David, you know this is a great shot. A rating high or low won't change that. I was going to give you a 7/7 because you really seemed to want one. Then....I looked at the rates this photo has been given. My 7/7 isn't needed at all! For a bird photo to get by without a "bird hater" low rate is almost unheard of. I'll hang onto that 7/7 for a photo that's been downrated. It's important to conserve the 7/7s :0).

Jamie, thank you for the nice comment!

David, did you crop much on this one? I'd like a touch more of the claw at the bottom. This is a great shot, regardless. So sharp and detailed, with great lighting! Nice job!

Extraordinary bird portrait, she looks round healthy! The photograph makes this going, with superbe composition and definition, I think she would be proud of such a nice work ;)

Cheers, Rafael

Okay, I see what you mean. If you had left the bottom in, no more of the claw would be showing anyway. Still a great shot and you can't complain about this one at all!

David please don't forget that quite a few people liked your image and spoke about it. Few anonymous rates that don't make sense are just that. Few numbers. Regards,

I wish I could put 'test photos' up as nice as yours. To heck with the ratings system -- remember, it isn't paying you anything, your paycheck (unless you are in a very extraordinary situation) doesn't depend on it, those of us who know Depth of Field, sharpness and a good capture, know that you probably spent hours taking this one photo, then considerable time editing it, and then took the trouble to post it.

There always will be the 2/2 and 3/3/ raters, but whether it's the old system or the new system of rating, they all have their faults.

'The Cream Rises to the Top'

That's where this belongs and I'm certain -- absolutely certain -- that the powers that be (aka BM) at Photo.net know exactly of the problem you complain in the Site Feedback Forum, but remember, it's just numbers. I've posted my share of 3/3 and 2/2/ rated photos, and remember that 'street photos' such as comprise a large part of what I take, often get very low ratings, and to get a high rating is most extraordinary.

And, it appears, the newer system of choosing Top Rated Photo or whatever goal you have, does not entirely regard ratings . . . . and so . . . I often say in the Site Forum . . . so what? You know you do excellent work (as above) and those who see your work also know and that should be enough -- and while validation from a perfect rating sytem would be nice, no one has figured out how to do that yet. In the meantime, I don't take down photos I like which are idiosyncratic which gain 3.5/3.5 or so, because I LIKE THEM and to heck with the rest of the raters. It's MY PORTFOLIO and MY FOLDERS who people ultimately will look at and judge my talents (and lack thereof).

And if I could take a bird shot one-half as good as the above, I'd probably be posting them too.

I wish I had some salve to ease the pain of the ratings system, but it morphs over time, and there always will be bruised egos, but you know this is a damn good photo and so do those of us who clicked on it.

Thanks for the link.

Best wishes.

I would 'quote' and save Brian Mottersheads remarks (or pertinent quotations therefrom). He's the guy in charge and his remarks about this photo confirm that it's top notch and I'd hate to see them deleted -- why not quote them and put them in this 'comment' section?

This is an excellent photo. It deserves high scores, and I rate it because of that. My rate is also to help cancel out the loser's lowball rates. If people are fed up with bird images, SKIP OVER THEM. I'm sick of this crap too - very frustrating. Same just happened to my latest...

Here's what I wrote in response to your forum post:

Gees, David. You are getting way too worked up over this picture. You've had many people tell you it's excellent. You know it's excellent. Just ignore the low ratings. What do you really care what those people think? Apply your own filter and just let it go. They are just numbers. Nothing more. You get a significant number of comments on your pictures and they are far more valuable. All the best!

That said, I for one hope you don't stop posting pictures.
