This guy was completely unafraid of me, which worked nicely in my

favor. I'm finding that prime lenses aren't so great for nature

work... I have to stay in one place and wait for the animals to come

to me. In this case, 200mm didn't allow for me to get the entire bird

in the frame, but I think the close-up still shows most of the

markings. I appreciate all thoughts and critiques...

I love my Primes! I think they are the Sharpest and best for nature work! You say this guy (Blue jay) was tame (completely unafraid of me) so all you have to do is move, Thats what I do. I stand out there near the bird feeders as still as I can and ether move forward or back as slow as I can I have no problem it just takes getting use to and learning how to stand for a long time. I do the same thing for other birds out back by the river where there is no food. :o)

I am going to post two new pictures later today that I took yesterday hope you like.

Take care and have fun.

David,

I should have been more clear knowing how volitile that subject can be. My statement was almost as bad as saying Nikons are better than Canons! In the position I use movement just isn't possible; I'm boxed into a corner. Many of the places I shoot just don't allow free movement.

I didn't intend to challenge optical quality; I believe that once you use pro-grade glass, technique is more important then the subtle difference in optics between top-level zooms and primes.

This 200mm is my first prime, and my experience is that while optics are superb, the fliexibility of a zoom is something I miss. Just a personal preference... I certainly don't mean to offend any prime lovers!

No Offence Taken. Sometimes we have to move out of our box that's all. There are good Zooms and Primes out there. :o)
