warren williams 0 Posted May 9, 2005 Howard this is quite an unusual execution for you. It's very nice, really colourful. My only gripe is that the top quarter of the shot is quite dark - was this intentional? Warren Link to comment
afterthoughts 0 Posted May 9, 2005 Yes, it was very dark around 9:30 PM and this was a hand held capture. The light source was the light source. Could not use a flash. Link to comment
r_e 0 Posted May 9, 2005 CR: Very well done! Good lightenend and - both are present - the real one and the poster. So the viewer dont have to make a decision ... REgards Link to comment
bens 0 Posted May 9, 2005 holy toledo. howard, no fooling, you know i don't always go nuts over your stuff, i try to be honest. this one got me. a stunning photo in about ten different ways. lemme see. first of all, has a candid street feel, with an unusual, somewhat dignified every day guy; the composition is top rate, including with the railing cutting on an angle against the subject and image behind him; the colors terrific, the picture tells the carnival story, including the gritty reality versus the pretty (but cheap) fantasy of its shows. He could be sharper, but that doesn't stop me from telling you this is magnificent, MAGNIFICENT, and when i learn its a night shot, i am even more impressed. way to go, howard. lead the way. leave the pretty bird shots to someone else. this is life. i am humbled. wilsontsoi 0 Posted May 10, 2005 Very cool capture, Howard. Just the right gesture with very nice composition and great colors. I especially like the purple reflection on the handrail. Night shot, huh? I'll bet folks would like to know if you shot wide open at f2.8, and if it was at high ISO, and what white balance setting to handle the artificial light. You really have a knack for street. I'd be proud to have shot this! ^_^ Link to comment
pnital 36 Posted May 10, 2005 Howard, the juxtaposition is significant! very good street shot with a sensitive awareness. Pnina Link to comment
kslonaker 0 Posted May 11, 2005 Howard, this one is great! It really catches your eye with that huge poster behind the man. Well seen and well captured! Link to comment
alexandra rauh 0 Posted May 12, 2005 Howard, done so generously, in color, composition and innocent meeting,of the poster girl with a real man Link to comment
johncrosley 0 Posted May 12, 2005 This is an extraordinary 'street' shot. As a night and even sometimes 'carnival' shooter, using digital equipment, I know how difficult it can be to get such captures and how rewarding when one first sees them in the viewfinder and on the digital screen on camera's back and wonders 'will it convey to the rest of the world thusly?' Well, this one certainly did -- it's really the best of the best. The use of colors is splendid -- it's been discussed well enough above, as well as the triangle created by the (colorful) railing, left corner. The insousciance of the man, relaxing with his fag hanging out of his mouth, handband around his hair, and the droopy-eyed and droopy-breasted woman behind him with her 'seen-it-all' but I'm still sexy look on her face is just to much for words -- your photograph says it all. On first view, in your wonderful folder (04) Candid . . . etc., I thought this might be an 'artist' with pop art taking a break, and looked much much closer through folders, etc., and was delighted to see it's a 'street' capture, and that the PN critics who supposedly 'dislike' 'street' photography, had the same reaction I did -- stunning, extraordinary work, worthy of a place in one's lifetime best portfolio. Phil_Light 794 Posted May 13, 2005 This is the stuff legends are born of. I can hear Bruce Springsteen and the Asbury Park Boardwalk just coming alive now. I'm just sorry I wasn't together enough during the early seventies to photograph more of my surrounds!! This is really great character imagery. I hate to say it but with carnie's the weirder, the better! Link to comment
aepelbacher 0 Posted May 13, 2005 This is fabulous, Howard!! I love the contrasts ... and the similarities. Like their expressions ... almost the same. Great capture!! Link to comment
