ikar.us 0 Posted June 7, 2005 The facade seems to be on the northern side? Perhaps in the morning or eveening the illumination would be more convenient. Link to comment
maria 7 Posted June 7, 2005 Hi Michael, thanks for the comment. facades of Greek orthodox churches are always to the West, as far as I am aware, as the altar has to be oriented to the East, irrespective of the city plan. The street runs from NW to SE so the facade must be NW: http://www.saloniki.org/map/08.htm . So the light was coming from the East; this was definitely a morning photo (10am, maybe 10:30). Well, I was only 4 hours in Thessaloniki - 2 hours guided tour and 2 hours free walk; the light haven't changed much. Buses from the village where I stayed to Thessaloniki were only 2 times a day, a 3rd time if you were lucky (starting 10 before 7 am), and not speaking Greek I found it too risky to miss the bus back if making a trip alone ... Besides, the seaside was much more relaxing :) But I will go end August this year, and stay in Thessaloniki itself; and have more occasions. Above a view from what must be perfectly from the south. But I agree that I haven't done any contrast corrections etc to the scan. regards Maria Link to comment
mspanakis 0 Posted June 18, 2005 Lucky you, try to walk in the neighbourhood behind the harbour called 'Ladadika' That was the oil-market place (as the name suggests) and later became the red-light district. It has now been re-valued with restoration, bars, cafes, restaurants and things but it retains that 'glorious past' atmosphere. Watch out for events at 'Mylos' or just go an see anything that's on at the time of your visit. Also, not to miss the Byzantine Museum. Of course, August is not the right time to visit Thessaloniki - the city is dead - but here is a list of what else you could do during that dead period... I will try to make it in November for the International Film Festival (24h x 7 days cinema! great atmosphere) Link to comment
maria 7 Posted June 18, 2005 Hi Manolis, thanks for the kind comment. I have to see how much in advance I can go before 26-27 August, because I have to leave on the 27th of August. I have also to finish the paper, this till Monday. I haven't booked any hotel yet (my contract ... is still forthcoming) and heard that in August actually it is very full, so hopefully the city will not be that dead. Maybe just the inhabitants 'escape' and leave that over to tourists! In November I will go to Lisbon. Well, hopefully. Yesterday I've got the confirmation that my presentation at the Congress there was accepted. My work contract isn't ready yet, though ... I hope it will be, before mid-July, as that is the deadline for Congress registration, and I don't afford much longer paying in advance :( Speaking of Lisbon, yesterday at the Italian class (conversation class, "Current topics") we spoke about Portugal. We were 4 students present, + the lecturer. One of the girls just came back from 1 week vacation in Lisbon, the guy was there somewhen, and me too. The lecturer wasn't ... I think I will take my mother to Portugal. I actually wanted to take her to Greece, maybe another time. After all, I want to go once to Athens and you convinced me Santorini is worth seeing! kind regardsMaria PS: I already have 5 dishes ready to uplod, 6 other photographed, and now I am going to make 2 further ones, but my quota ... maria 7 Posted September 20, 2005 I am afraid I cannot take a picture at better lighting - there is so much sun in Greece ... Maybe I shall try B&W? thanks Maria Link to comment
