hanna_cowpe 0 Posted May 5, 2005 I'm interested in your comments, particularly on exposure. Is the rock at the top too dark? Thanks for your time. Link to comment
adele_seitz 0 Posted May 5, 2005 This is a BEAUTIFUL shot. Wonderfully thought out...framed nicely...good exposure. The rock at the top could have a bit more light along the top to define the edge. A quick dodge would do that. It looks like it adds to the picture...so show it! Very nice water movement...I LOVE it!!! Link to comment
donpaulson 0 Posted May 5, 2005 I like this photo - but the shutter speed was just a little too slow for my taste making the water just a little over blurry. Link to comment
guyscrivner 0 Posted May 5, 2005 Hannah, I played around with this and a lighter rock did not make that much difference. Good like it is. Nice colors and textures. Link to comment
hanna_cowpe 0 Posted May 5, 2005 Thanks to all of you for your time. I see it's a mixed reaction and we all have different tastes when it comes to blurred water. In this case I think the water needs to be smooth to let the leaves stand out. Textured water would have "drowned" them. Brett, I don't remember the exact details but I shot this with a polarizer, small aperture, probably at close to 90mm and serveral seconds exposure. Sorry I can't be more specific. I know I should keep records but am just too disorganized. Link to comment
davidroossien 0 Posted May 6, 2005 I like all the cris-crossing shoots of water. It's a beauty. Link to comment
robertbrown 1 Posted May 6, 2005 This is a really beautiful shot. Nicely framed, good shutter speed, fine light. Did you shoot this last year from a different angle? Link to comment
hanna_cowpe 0 Posted May 7, 2005 David and Robert, thankyou for your encouraging comments. Yes, I did shoot this, probably last autumn, possibly from a slightly different angle. Manoevering in this area usually depends on where the most recent trees have fallen, but it's one of my favourite places and I return frequently to try something different. Link to comment
abintraphoto 0 Posted May 7, 2005 Yeah, the slower than 'usual' shutter speed makes it stand out for me. I was playing with the crop by scrolling the image. I might remove that last bit of white water at the bottom but an excellent image as is - jaaaa Link to comment
colin carron 58,916 Posted May 8, 2005 Nice side to side movement of the stream of water. Link to comment
henrimanguy 0 Posted May 8, 2005 The rock is not specially too dark in my opinion, but I find the water a bit too "milky" for my taste. I don not detest this kind of effect, but here it is really too much. Link to comment
josemiguelnieto1 0 Posted May 9, 2005 Somebody has used my passport to make rating without criterion. Him request excuses to me for that reason, I finish changing the previous rating (3/3) by 6/6. I cannot use the 7/7 for the same reason. Best regards Link to comment
barclayphoto 0 Posted May 10, 2005 No the top rock if fine. I'd say the exposure if fine all around. I prefer this type of look for water. Compositionally I feel it is a bit unbalanced, my eye wants to stay on the left side of the image... Link to comment
hanna_cowpe 0 Posted May 10, 2005 Thankyou all for your comments and suggestions. Jose, I'm sorry you're having problems. I hope the abuse team can sort it out. Unfortunately there are people who can't resist irritating others. Link to comment
Landrum Kelly 64 Posted May 12, 2005 Hanna, I usually don't like the long exposue on water, but it works here. Unfortunately for me, the really interesting part of the picture is the upper part with the leaves. I don't think that the overall composition works too well on this one. I think that, if you cropped off the bottom 40%, the picture would be better overall. Obversely, if you crop off the top 20% or so, then the picture of the falls would work better, in my opinion. There are just too many points of interest for me as it is, but it might produce two pictures which are not quite as complicated but still very interesting. Link to comment
hanna_cowpe 0 Posted May 13, 2005 Lannie, thanks for your critique. I hadn't thought about cropping at all but your suggestions are certainly worth considering. The fresh young leaves really make it for me and I'm amazed they've come out fairly clear considering the exposure time. You would think the movement of the water alone would have blurred them. I'll go shopping and see how your ideas work out. Link to comment
abintraphoto 0 Posted May 13, 2005 Obversely ... ?! Is that an allowed Scrabble word Hanna .... ? sol Link to comment
vicki_miller 0 Posted May 17, 2005 At first I did not agree with Lannie's comment, about having two images, but then I took another look at it. Yes, the focal point/interest is the green leaves. LOVE the blurred white shapes, contrasted with the pebbly-grained rock. Good job! Vicki Link to comment
hanna_cowpe 0 Posted May 17, 2005 Well Vicki, you have to listen to Lannie; he's a wise man. Thanks for dropping in. Link to comment
kslonaker 0 Posted May 18, 2005 I hate to do it, but I'm going to disagree with Lannie. For me, I like the depth the tall crop gives this. You may be able to crop a little at the bottom without losing that feeling, but I think making this square would lose the depth. Usually I find blurred water a little cliche (for lack of a better word), but it works well here to make those leaves stand out. Nicely done, Hanna. Link to comment
