Would it be better cropped 5:4 as opposed to full framed?

Anyway, I was trying to shoot the dunes and everywhere I looked there are footprints and so I kept walking. After going about a mile I came over the top of this dune and there are several photogs jockeying for position just before sunset. So I said... on second thought I better not say that here.

I shot this guy from about 200 yards @ 350mm, then I turned around and left.

imo, it'd be better balanced if it was cropped to 5:4 like you suggested. i think it would defineatly make a good image even better. but having looked through your portfolio here, it doesn't seem like you need much help with formalistic studies ,-)

I would tend to like it fully framed, but, on the other hand, I find a bit annoying the patch of light to the ridge of the dune to the right: it is nicer to have such a highlight only on the back of the photog, so -all in all- cropping might be a better idea.

I like the crossing diagonals of the shadow of the dune and the man with his shadow... they give lots of three-dimensionality to the shot, even more enhanced by the texture in the foreground sand.

First of all, thanks to all of you for taking the time to comment. Salvatore that is exactly what I was thinking. That triangle kind of bugs me as well, but I do like the lines that filter over it and it is much more noticeable in a larger image.

Jonathan, that was the best compliment of all! I really didn't care about any dune shots after I got this. Not like they would have been original.

Knicki, the bull was up in the pen, and we all know what he was doing. And you didn't know this was a self portrait? Haha.

And thank you Elle.

Very beautiful rendering of the idea. I think cropping the left 1/6th frame would look much better.

A quick levels adjustment will add a little more warmth to the atmosphere too.

Kind Regards.

Anthony, very nice composition, Zafar's crop looks good as well.It is one of the good dune images at PN. The human figure is so well placed.

Well done. Pnina

Thank you M. Zafar... I think I was flirting with trying something like your mod.

Thanks Filippo and Pnina. Much aprreciated.

For a change, I vote for NOT cropping - I like your original post. I think the light on the right makes for a pleasing triangle effect; the man, his shadow, and the bit of light in the upper right.
