salvatore.mele 1 Posted April 24, 2005 I liked the interplay of the sunset light onto this wood sculpture, pulling out some of the texture of the carving, reminiscent of the ritual tattoos of Maoritanga. I'd appreciate your thoughts about the composition of this shot: what about the location of the white eyes? Link to comment
Guest Guest Posted April 24, 2005 Salvatore, you are, indeed, a traveler ... all over the globe have you traveled! This image conjures lots of deep cultural feel and the light gave enough textures to hold interest. The white spots are arranged, more or less, diagonally to provide the dynamicism. It is certainly worthy of a traveler's guide publication. Link to comment
AaronFalkenberg 0 Posted April 25, 2005 Interesting. Is this it's original orientation or did you rotate the camera? It can get a bit hypnotic after a while. There is a bit of abstraction this way that wouldn't be present if the head was vertical. cheers, Aaron p.s. how do you like the filter? I've been contemplating getting one for a while. salvatore.mele 1 Posted April 26, 2005 Jim, Arthur, Aaron, thanks for the positive feedback on this image. As for the orientation, that's the original one, the carving had a tattoed body and a head leaning on a side. I understand is one of the posture of ritual warrior dances, which include the showing of the tongue. I tried to rotate it to a normal position, but it makes no sense since the sunset light was quite directional and the shadows I get make me seasick... As for the filter, Aaron, I think I do not know anymore where my UV and Skylight ended up: I've the Moose constantly screwed in front of the lenses. My typical landscape shots benefit of it since colours do tend to get cold, and I think the warming effect for already-warm colours is quite sedate and not excessive (like here, for instance). The only thing I regret is not being able to get one for the 20mm since they do not come -or so I remember- in the anti-vignetting no-front-thread flavour. It's a pain to get them in Europe... shipping and time lost to recover packages in customs ends up costing as much, if not more, as the filter does. Link to comment
jeremy freeland 0 Posted April 26, 2005 The eyes say circle to me more than diagonal. I like how they stand out from the rest of the image: seems to me that they initiate the theme of slightly irregular circles and curves throughout the image. Link to comment
