Nice shot Jonathan. I've shot a few of my sister jumping and she always tells me it's best to get the horse at the peak of the jump with both feet above the rails. I guess then you would know that the horse cleared the jump and didn't knock the rails.

Nice action shot, and well focused, but if you were to crop the left and right white fences off the scene, making this into a vertical picture, it might look better. The horse & rider get lost in all that white fencing. That would also make the subjects larger..... unless it's an ad for the jump equipment?

I think this is an interesting critique. I for another professional photographer and we shoot these events just about every weekend. This photo as is, and other photos composed the same, sell like CRAZY. If I'd composed it like you suggested it almost definatly would not have sold.

Personally I would like it better the other way, but hey, you shoot what sells right?

I guess it depends on your purpose for the picture. If the customers are horse-show people, they'd probably feel happier with the whole photo. If it was to be a magazine cover, I'd crop it. At least in this photo, you DO have multiple choices of how to set it up. If I was to change anything, it would be to clone out that tree trunk sticking out of the rider's back.
