salvatore.mele 1 Posted April 19, 2005 Shot taken at about 3900m/13000ft, after five hours of night walk and climb, from the flanks of the Mont Blanc massif. The only sound, up there, is your breath and heartbeat, both slightly irregular due to the altitude and the fact you're breathing about half the oxygen you breath at sea level. Therefore, looking at the shot I "see the silence".The tiny spots on the ice are tents of people who, illegally, camp before climbs. Closeups are here.A shot taken at sunrise is here, with people to set the scale. Link to comment
gustaf rydevik 0 Posted April 19, 2005 I feel that the border is a little bit too heavy on this one, and detracts from the IMHO awesome scenery Link to comment
geoprospector 0 Posted April 19, 2005 Very good catpure! Good that you mentioned the tents, it gives a good impression of the dimensions in the image. Guess it is always the same problem with those 'famous' mountains: You are never alone up there! But once you are up there and you have a scenery like that, it doesn't really matter anymore. robertbrown 1 Posted April 19, 2005 Salvatore, this is beautiful scene and you've caught it in pretty morning light. What I like best about the scene is the depth and how my eye wanders to the distant ridges and peaks. I'm slightly annoyed by the tents, though I understand why you wouldn't clone them out. Now that I know what they are, they do give this shot a sense of scale. Overall, this is a very attractive alpine shot. Why is it illegal to camp there? I've decided to load a b&w, toned version for your amusement. Hope you don't mind. Link to comment
jeff.grant 0 Posted April 20, 2005 Salvatore, I like this a lot. The colour contrast between rock and snow is great and the repeating mountains off into the distance really works. Knowing that those little dots are tents adds to my appreciation. I am inclined to agree about the border. The scene is dramatic in itself. It doesn't need a heavy border. Link to comment
jeremy freeland 0 Posted April 20, 2005 Yup, Salvatore, you've caught it nicely. It takes very little for me to put myself in place to feel the cool mountain air thrown off by the rocks and ice in the shade with the promise of warm sunlight to come, my own warmth from my exertions, crisp indrawn breaths, and the sense of the surrounding clarity of the air. I like the way you get this too. The bottom right corner, as the piece of mountain closest to the photographer, tells me as viewer that I'm in shade and on steep ground. The patches of sunlight on the snowfields opposite tell me that the warm sun is coming. The succession of ridges, with the left hand peak below the horizon, tells me I'm high. It's an enjoyable shot just aesthetically, but there's more to it than that. Best, Jeremy. Link to comment
sef1664877429 0 Posted April 20, 2005 Great sense of depth, all those little tents down there, and you're up here. You might go to a place like this to get away from it all, only to find it crawling with people, but there are still places you can go to get some peace. Well, that would be my interpretation, anyway. And there's just enough foreground in the bottom corner to anchor you to the scene... Link to comment

david robinson 0 Posted April 24, 2005 Really lovely alpine scene in this cool, crisp morning air. The composition is quite strong with the repeated diagonal zig zags. I tend to agree with Jeff though about the frame. Well done. Link to comment
flynn 4 Posted April 29, 2005 Really nice peaceful place. Yes lighter borders would help. Link to comment
schneekranich 0 Posted May 11, 2005 silence - I see it in the far away hilltops half hidden in the fog, contrasting to the more contrasted, sunny, "speaking" foreground. Silence is something to long for viewing this picture. Cheers! Link to comment
