About the lighting...I used two vivitar 285 HV to light the background which was cream white (you are right about the "dull background"), one vivitar 283 (on his right side) for main light and sunpak 383 (above the camera) for fill light. All these flashes were connected with wein peanut slaves. I reduced the power of the "build in" flash of this little camera by covering it with scotch tape. Its reduced power was enough to trigger the other flashes.
