Saturday Night in the Flats, Veterans Memorial Bridge, Cleveland (aka Detroit Superior Viaduct)

I am still experimenting with applying small amounts of USM while

doing a step-wise image size reduction. In some cases this produces an

acceptable photograph; here, however, it seems to have introduced a

very fine sawtooth-like edge to the bridge railings. This is visible

when viewed in LARGER mode. Your comments, suggestions, and ratings

are requested.

My apologies to Robert Hillman, who commented on this photograph earlier and made some suggestions about the cropping. I deleted the photograph to edit some parts of it and reposted. His kind suggestions, of course, were lost. Regards.

This is a very nice and clean image. I don't understand the philosophy behind the "step wise image size reduction" technique. In "larger" view I am not bothered by the tiny steps, though I think this would look better with more pixels. There is so much detail!

Walter, I don't see any of the problems you mention. It looks fine on my end. Terrific night/bridge shot!

Lovely shot! But if you are looking to improve it, I'd suggest making the extreme right pillar parallel to the edge. Also, the glow over the bldgs seems to suddenly fade to darkness. Perhaps thats' the way it was.......just my 2 cents.

A very fine night shot indeed! I agrre about the slight straightening and perhaps recovering some slight detail in the extreme left buildings.

When I first saw this I just said WOW! It has such an impact when you first see those pale blues against a single gold peak. There's a 3D look to this, probably due to your sharpening technique, but also the layers of support underneath the bridge.

Bravo. what an excellent night photograph and so great control of the lighting!

About that moire problem (I think that's what's it called) - isn't that 1, more from the scanner resolution, or 2, the display resolution vs. the image display size? For me, there are always certain zoom sizes that look horrible, but one +/- zoom that is perfect. frustrating...

Walt. I really like that you got much more of the bridge in this shot. The reflection in the water has a "Erie" feel to it which I guess is appropriate. Nice one, Jim

No apology necessary Walter. This is a beautiful photo. What I was wondering about and am still wondering about is whether a more horizontal image in which a good deal of the bottom is cropped would be even more effective. This means losing the reflection, which is a lovely part of this image but, I think, maybe takes something away from its cohesiveness and power. So my very tentative suggestion is to try a verson where forty percent is cropped from the bottom and a just a bit is taken from the right. I would do this and post it by understand how to insert the images here. Regards.

I also am wondering about a cropped version of this. I've had several images where the reflection doesn't really draw enough attention to warrant keeping it, and I feel like this might be one of those situations. I'm a big fan of night photos and I love this image so I'd be interested to see both versions! Great shot!

If you tilt the image to the right to square up the pillar then you'll get folks complaining that the buildings are leaning to the right and you need to fix that. The tilting buildings would be much more disconcerting IMO. Also...the reflections in the water are reminiscent of the impressionistic movement....leave the photo as is.
