michaelseewald 237 Posted March 23, 2005 'The Three Graces', Xian, China 'The Three Graces', Xian, China The Three Graces After visiting the Terra Cotta Warriors, and almost getting arrested for photographing them as it was 'Verboten', we (the tour) ate at a local restaurant with a park next to it. I found these ladies just after having lunch, and thought it was just adorable. I stopped and instantly hid my face and camera setup by huddling against a wall, turning from the walkway, as the Chinese folks were so enamored with westerners they would flock to me in huge numbers at just seeing me stand still. That would have stopped me from getting this image. I pre-focused down the wall, guessing the distance they were behind me, and just after turning and getting the shot I realized I'd shot it with b&w. But as my collectors had pre-purchased a color image I had to frantically turn around and change backs on the camera, putting on the color back(that's what was nice about interchangeable backs, now we have photoshop so you don't need to shoot b&w). ......................At that same moment my worst fears came true. They were awakened by some guy walking by with a ghetto blaster radio cranked way up (the only time in the three week trip I even saw anybody with one). I continued changing the backs anyway and turned around to see they had fallen to sleep again anyway. Comments. Link to comment
minicucci 0 Posted March 23, 2005 And I should add that as good as this image is, it is made even better by your detailed explanation about taking the shot. It is a good lesson to me--this art of explainng the shot as well as showing it. Thank you. There are so many things that I like about this image. Their postures, their faces, the light, the composition, etc..But what really gets to me is the mud on their shoes. Link to comment
giuseppe_miriello1 0 Posted March 23, 2005 It is an amazing capture. Very candidly it tells about the subjects and their day... I am not going to add nothing on the tecnique, but i wanted to tell you that i love this shot, and i don't think that b/w would render it better than that (or at least, we could see the b/w version and then decide). Guest Guest Posted March 25, 2005 Excellent shot and I love reading your stories behind each picture. You are teaching me that taking a photograph is a LOT more than merely pressing the shutter button. Link to comment
ricardo navarro 0 Posted April 2, 2005 Perhaps everything has already been said above about the merits of this photograph. I would only add that the posture of the lady at center, including her feet's, so well contributes to its overall fun and innocent mood. Fun and interesting story too. Link to comment
free2run 0 Posted August 5, 2005 Alright, these ladies were just like my neighbors or my mother in China. This image reminds me a lot of things... Thank you so much, Michael, for sharing this excellent picture. Wei Link to comment
