wogears 186 Posted March 20, 2005 Actually, spectacles existed in the 13th century; these frames were obviously the high-priced option. :-) Link to comment
Guest Guest Posted March 20, 2005 perhaps the painter Tommaso de Modena might have dabbled in the technical arts (alas, he painted in the 14th cent., but was first to depict their use). (-: Link to comment
wogears 186 Posted March 20, 2005 Most histories assign a date of ca. 1280 for the first use of spectacles; some go as early as 1260. The discovery has been attributed to Roger Bacon among others. My wife, among others including the lady pictured, will wear her glasses to medievalist events because it is dangerous for her to do otherwise. When absolute(?) authenticity is mandated, I actually have to lead her from place to place. Link to comment
