salvatore.mele 1 Posted March 19, 2005 It was ways too late after our descent from the summit ofthe Aiguille du Tour, in the french Alps, to get a decent light for amountain shot, not to mention a decent snow to walk back, but I likedthis scene, with its series of triangles and vertical lines.I would welcome feedback (and rates) on the way to improve mymountain-composition skills.p.s. The view from the summit is here. Ifyou like those scenes, you can peek at many more remotelandscapes Link to comment
robvine 0 Posted March 19, 2005 Good use of light and shadow but the border is way to large. 6/6 Link to comment
amalsircar 2 Posted March 19, 2005 You got the result you wanted to achieve. A little more space on the left would have been better? Link to comment
atle.g 0 Posted March 19, 2005 Simple and neat. I like the two snow "paths" wich make the leading lines. But i do feel the left side takes a bit attention from that "journey" the lines are creating.. stopping a bit at the left and wandering further out to the left.I think i would prefer a left crop. I will upload an example on what i mean. Still like it as it appears. Regards! Link to comment
pawel_czapiewski1 0 Posted March 20, 2005 Very well composed. Suggested crop has merit but chops off the horizontal line on the left that in my mind adds to the composition. Contrast is extreme, tried to reduce it but working on the jpeged blue channel from the scan is a nightmare - it'd have to be cleaned up first. i'll attach it anyway. Regards, Link to comment
salvatore.mele 1 Posted March 20, 2005 Atle, thanks for your time to suggest a crop. I had thought of it as well, but I decided to keep the horizontal line to the left. There is a reason to it. Your proposal has a natural lead from bottom right to middle left and then up to top right. Now, this is NOT what we did that day. I know this sounds silly, but the idea of the picture is to keep the different planes distinct to have more an idea of difficulty of access to the towering spikes of rock. In short, your suggestion is more valid from a smoothness-of-view point of view, although being there suggested me a different framing. And, I am biased since going up the snow culoir in front of the viewer was the most difficult thing I had ever done before that day ;-) I post up here the reason. Green arrow is where I took some of the other pics in this folder. Thanks again for your time. Link to comment
salvatore.mele 1 Posted March 20, 2005 I agree with you. I do not have the .tif scan with me (they are on a computer to which I have access every now and then) and I also edited this post from a reduced .jpg I happened to have. I will try and play with the blue channel when I will systematically go through all my images, a day. Thanks a lot for your time. Link to comment
Guest Guest Posted March 20, 2005 I like Pawel's adjustments, but prefer a compromise crop that simply eliminates the levelling of snow elevation at the left side. Link to comment

robertbrown 1 Posted April 4, 2005 Salvatore, I'm obviously coming in fairly late here. I'm not all that good at critiquing this type of shot--the scenery is so spectacular it leaves me speechless. I like the composition and I wouldn't crop. After looking at this for a while, my concerns are the ultra high contrast, heavy polarization, and super-white foreground snow. While there were other ways to handle the harsh light, I'm not convinced they would have yielded a better photo. Have you been gone for a while? Another trip? Link to comment
davidroossien 0 Posted April 6, 2005 I like the graphical nature of the photo--think it creates the drama and flair that suits the subject. The repeating of the leaning rocks in the middle and upper right complete the effect. Link to comment
hansdans 0 Posted April 6, 2005 Beautiful photo....and I like it as it is - no cropping together with the black it is a bold statement:) Good! Link to comment
